R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) has an opening for a knowledgeable, result-driven and enthusiastic Professional Engineer to join our Municipal Transportation Planning team. With a strong transportation and traffic engineering background, you will guide and support planning, design, and construction planning activities for a variety of municipal projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for continuing and further developing our transportation planning and traffic services in the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton and Niagara Region area (GTHA).

What To Expect

Working closely with the Vice President - Municipal Transportation Planning, you will assist in further developing the public sector transportation planning practice in the GTHA. The individual will be expected to bring a wide array of experiences to the Burnside team in the core areas of transportation planning and traffic engineering, including roadway safety, signal operations (including transit signals), traffic staging plans, intersection operations, system performance, functional roadway design, and Intelligent transportation systems.

This role is best suited for someone who is highly motivated and excels at working in a fast pace, adaptive and innovative environment. You would bring confidence in your ability to integrate into collaborative project teams and be able to manage competing priorities.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice President - Municipal Transportation Planning, the primary responsibilities of this position include :

  • Lead development on conceptual and functional level designs, traffic operations and safety reviews involving urban and rural roads.
  • Project leadership on various proposals and projects pertaining to traffic / transit signal operational studies, roadway safety studies, traffic impact analysis, area analysis.
  • Provide expertise in traffic signals, ITS, and connected vehicles.
  • Oversee design, construction, and operation of traffic signals (including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Connected Vehicles (CV) Initiatives).
  • Lead or participate in client meetings.
  • Engage in active business development for transportation planning and traffic engineering projects.
  • Deliver projects in a timely and efficient manner.

Professional Knowledge & Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a transportation professional with a minimum of 10 years of experience with the following qualifications, experience and skills :

  • A registered professional engineer in Ontario, or eligible to be licensed in Ontario;
  • Ideally have designation as a Road Safety Professional (RSP);
  • Experience as a project manager on transportation planning and traffic engineering projects;
  • Experience in road safety studies, vision zero policies and traffic calming implementation;
  • Experience in temporary conditions and traffic management plans for construction;
  • Ideally have experience in traffic signal optimization, transit priority and ATMS;
  • Working knowledge of traffic engineering software including Synchro, SimTraffic, and Vissim or Aimsum;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal / team player, organizational and analytical skills;
  • Experience mentoring staff;
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite of programs;
  • Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects concurrently; and
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and vehicle.
