As a Senior Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the team of Engineers and Planners to provide direction on the implementation of a transportation system that aligns with the goals and policies of The City Plan and integrates with surrounding land uses. You will also be responsible for planning and optimizing transportation infrastructure that meets the demand of a growing, complex city and serves an increasing number of destinations using a range of travel modes. You will act as a wider resource to the Branch, contributing technical knowledge and experience towards transportation policy and plans.
What will you do?
- Review and prepare timely responses to complex and diverse statutory, land use and development plans
- Review and prepare responses to Council motions, inquiries from Council and the public, amendments to Arterial Roads for Development Bylaw, and road closure applications
- Review and approve Transportation Impact Assessments with the focus on an integrated transportation system that offers broader array of movement options
- Seek solutions to complex transportation engineering and planning problems that are practical, functional and meet the strategic goals and targets established through The City Plan
- Use highly developed relationship building skills, negotiation abilities and consensus building techniques with Applicants, Industry, Colleagues, Citizens and Council
- Provide direction and leadership on long-range policies and programs to support the implementation of the City Plan
- Create a positive and cooperative working environment, with emphasis on accountability, integration, fiscal responsibility, constant improvement and morale
- Build and develop a team approach to accomplish tasks, work together and across departments to exchange ideas and solve problems to mutual benefit
- Mentor and empower team members to grow their technical skill set and knowledge and seek creative and integrated solutions
- Represent the section at City Council Public Hearings, Arterial Roads for Development Steering Committee, stakeholder engagement, interdepartmental meetings, as required
Qualifications- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Supplementary courses in Transportation Engineering, Land Use Planning and Planning Law are desired
- Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in one or more of the following areas: Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning, Land Use Planning and Transit/Multimodal Planning
- Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment

- Master's Degree in Transportation Engineering
Skills required for success:
- Understanding of important City of Edmonton policy such as Connect Edmonton, City Plan and transportation related plans
- Knowledge and understanding of transportation design guidelines and best practices (City of Edmonton, Transportation Association of Canada, Alberta Transportation, etc)
- Interpreting and understanding of transportation demand models and traffic modeling software outputs (such as Emme, Synchro or VISSIM)
- Strong Project Management skills required with an emphasis on meeting deadlines, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills to successfully communicate with technical and nontechnical audience
- Public presentation and public engagement experience
- Ability to work with cross-functional teams and lead professional engineers and planners
- Ability to apply engineering principles to developing best practices
- Ability to analyze complex technical problems and make timely and integrated decisions
- Possess strong skills to mediate and negotiate for results and build consensus
