Job summary

VIAVI Solutions Canada ULC in Ottawa is seeking a Senior Test Engineer to drive new product introduction and design robust automated test methods for MAP optical test platforms.

You will partner with R&D and manufacturing to deploy test strategies, develop fixtures, and ensure quality across production and service. Travel to Asia up to 15% may be required.

Qualifications

• 4-year Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering, Physics and/or Electrical Engineering.
• 4+ years’ experience in automated test development (hardware and software).
• Knowledge of fiber optic communications tech (Power Meter, Spectrum Analyzer, OTDR).
• LabWindows CVI programming, LabVIEW.
• NI TestStand experience beneficial.
• Structured programming language (C/C++).
• Python or scripting; SQL for test data management.
• Demonstrated project planning/management skills.
• Lean principles or data analysis experience.
• Self-starter, strong team player with leadership skills.
• Willingness to travel up to 15% to Asia sites.
• English is the primary language; additional languages beneficial.

Responsibilities

Summary

Designs, develops, and implements cost-effective methods of testing and troubleshooting systems and equipment for all phases of product development and manufacturing. Prepares test and diagnostic programs, designs test fixtures and equipment, and completes specifications and procedures for new products. Plans the labor, schedules, and equipment required for testing and evaluating standard and special devices.

Duties & Responsibilities

VIAVI, Ottawa Canada, Fiber Optic Lab & Production Test (FOPLT) Business Unit, has a need for a Senior Test Engineer with the experience and drive to make a difference. This position will directly support new product introduction and perform secondary support for the Asian contract manufacturing sites. Prior experience in the field of fiber optics is strongly preferred. The purpose of this position is ensuring high quality and reliable test methods and approaches are designed into automated test systems in manufacturing and service for fiber optic lab test equipment produced by the FOPLT Business unit. This position will partner with R&D during new product introduction and continue to support products through their lifecycle.

Primary Role and Responsibilities

This role will closely partner and be co-located with R&D at the VIAVI Ottawa office. New Product Introduction (NPI) for VIAVI market leading MAP optical test platform. Provide DFT direction to R&D at the concept stage of new product development Test development and ongoing continuous improvement for the test solutions on the MAP series product portfolio. Design, develop, and influence the various automated production systems required to implement the product test strategy. Devise the overall manufacturing and service and configuration strategy for new products and optimize manufacturing & service calibration and test. Detailed project planning to ensure that all production systems are developed, debugged, and validated in time for production pilot run. Partner with R&D and Mfg. Engineering to develop contract manufacturing ready and reliable test systems, jigs & fixturing. Effective use of Gage R&R and measure system evaluation tools in NPI to ensure stable test system are deployed in manufacturing and service. Installation and validation of production systems at the final production facility, usually at contract manufacture in Asia. Support TL9000 Periodic Re-test program for VIAVI MAP series portfolio. Metrics: Documented and defined product test strategy staring at product concept phase. Optimized test Cycle Time, while maintaining effective and agreed upon test coverage. Optimal test coverage and capability at specified budget constraints. Compliant Gage Repeatability and Reliability.

Personal Skills / Attributes and Experience

• 4-year Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering, Physics and/or Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 4 years’ experience developing automated test, both hardware and software.
• Knowledge of fiber optic communications technology – e.g., Power Meter, Spectrum Analyzer, OTDR etc.
• LabWindows CVI programing experience, LabVIEW.
• Experience with National Instruments TestStand would be beneficial.
• Experienced in a structured programming language (such as C / C++).
• Python or other scripting based programming experience SQL database programming experience for test record and data management.
• Demonstrated project planning/management skills.
• Process improvement and data analysis – knowledge of Lean principles or equivalent experience.
• Must be a self-starter, strong team player and demonstrate leadership skills.
• Ability to travel up to 15% of the time to Asia contract manufacturing site.
• Language - English primary. (Additional language skills beneficial but not a requirement).
