Valstone is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Tax Associate to support our finance team with tax compliance, planning, and strategy across our Canadian and U.S. operations.

This individual will play a key role in managing indirect taxes (sales tax, GST / HST), supporting year-end tax filings, coordinating with external advisors, and identifying tax efficiencies across our portfolio.

Here is a glimpse into our company : Valstone is a Montreal based software company that specializes in acquiring and operating vertical market software companies across the industrial vertical. Our goal is to act as an operating partner with each of the companies that we acquire. We find ways to drive value and take the business to their next level.

The successful candidate will be based in Montreal or Toronto, with the opportunity to work in a hybrid setting.

What Your Day Will Look Like :

  • Manage U.S. and Canadian sales tax registrations, filings, and remittances across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Monitor nexus exposure and ensure timely registration in new states / provinces as needed.
  • Maintain accurate tax rate and exemption configurations in ERP and billing systems.
  • Coordinate year-end corporate tax filings with external tax advisors (Canada and U.S.).
  • Gather and prepare supporting schedules, reconciliations, and documentation for filings.
  • Track filing deadlines and ensure timely and accurate submissions.
  • Act as the liaison between Valstone and external tax consultants for ongoing tax projects and audits.
  • Work with operating companies to ensure consistent and compliant tax processes.
  • Provide support on ad hoc tax issues related to new acquisitions or structural changes.
  • Research and propose tax-saving strategies, such as R&D tax credits, treaty benefits, or state incentives.
  • Support implementation of identified opportunities and track resulting benefits.
  • Assist in developing and documenting internal tax processes and controls.
  • Recommend automation or tools to improve efficiency and reduce tax risk.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

About You :

  • CPA designation or in-progress, with preference for candidates who have a tax specialization.
  • 3+ years of tax experience, preferably with exposure to both Canadian and U.S. tax compliance.
  • Solid understanding of indirect taxes (sales tax, GST / HST, use tax) across North America.
  • Experience working with external tax advisors or within a multi-entity corporate group is a strong asset.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel and familiarity with accounting / ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt; strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
