Job summary

ATS Industrial Automation in Canada is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer – Nuclear to lead design, development and qualification of nuclear automation solutions. You will act as a technical leader across project teams and ensure compliance with CSA standards and regulatory requirements.

The role requires a strong background in mechanical/electrical systems, ten years of engineering experience, and a P.Eng. designation.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary engineering degree and professional licensure preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide subject matter expertise on customer processes and equipment.
  • Take engineering responsibility for component and system analyses and calculations.
  • Prepare and review technical documents including FMEA, safety risk assessments, ALARA reports, installation/commissioning plans, operating sequence flowcharts, execution storyboards, and operating and maintenance manuals.
  • Define and verify design requirements, flow down customer and industry requirements, and ensure machine compliance.
  • Prepare and review vendor technical specifications, interface with vendors, conduct acceptance testing and buy‑off of equipment at vendor sites.
  • Use verification matrices to plan and execute all design/system requirements verification, including engineering drawings, simulations, POP testing, factory acceptance testing, and site acceptance testing.
  • Plan acceptance testing, prepare test plans, secure resources, and lead test execution with the customer.
  • Plan, execute and monitor systems design and development, prepare design plans, lead design reviews, and manage technical risk.
  • Identify, quantify and mitigate technical risk using CTRAs and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Manage project technical risk throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring alignment with budget and schedule.
  • Manage and monitor third‑party equipment vendors for compliance, budget, and schedule.
  • Communicate time estimates and resource requirements to department and project managers.
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives, including development of standards and procedures.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff.
  • Develop and verify design concepts and labor hour estimates for quote preparation.
  • Provide design support for CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 pressure boundary components within the ATS Certificate of Authorization as required.
  • Follow CSA N299/B51/N285/NQA quality requirements as defined in ATS QA manuals and procedures.
  • Work as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) and in radioactive environments, including nuclear site work.

  • Define and verify design requirements, flow down customer and industry requirements, and ensure machine compliance.

Qualifications

Education: Post‑secondary degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Systems Design, Electrical, Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, or equivalent. Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario preferred.

Experience: Ten years of experience in engineering design, development, and qualification of custom machinery, systems, or equipment. Five years of experience in nuclear tooling and equipment development and testing, preferably with field support. Thorough understanding of machine design and build, controls, structured problem solving, statistical analysis, and precision engineering principles. Strong written and oral communication and leadership or team collaboration skills.
