Job description

LaPrairie Group of Companies is seeking a dynamic Senior System Administrator to join their IT team in Downtown Calgary. As a Senior System Administrator, you will be responsible for overseeing the configuration, administration, and strategic improvement of the organization's IT infrastructure across cloud and on-premise environments. This role focuses on cloud-native operations (primarily AWS), enterprise systems, Microsoft 365, and identity management, while contributing to network security, backups, and infrastructure monitoring. The Senior System Administrator works collaboratively with other IT team members to ensure performance, reliability, and security of core systems, and provides mentorship to junior administrators. This position participates in the on-call rotation and requires occasional travel to remote sites.

If you have a passion for technology, excellent problem-solving skills, and thrive in a collaborative environment, we want to hear from you! Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Role And Responsibilities

  • Manage and optimize AWS cloud infrastructure (EC2, S3, IAM, VPCs, CloudWatch, and related services).
  • Administer Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and Intune.
  • Maintain hybrid identity services including Azure AD, Entra ID, Conditional Access, and MFA enforcement.
  • Monitor system performance using tools like PRTG, AWS CloudWatch, and centralized logging/SIEM solutions.
  • Apply patching, firmware upgrades, and routine maintenance to Windows Servers and virtualization platforms (VMware/Hyper-V).
  • Perform lifecycle management of infrastructure assets including upgrades, migrations, and decommissioning.
  • Support infrastructure-as-code principles and scripting for automation (e.g., PowerShell).
  • Support firewall and endpoint protection configuration in coordination with the security administrator.
  • Conduct vulnerability patch verification and participate in remediation workflows.
  • Administer backup and disaster recovery operations using Veeam for on-prem and cloud workloads.
  • Perform light database administration: access management, monitoring, and backup validation for SQL-based systems.
  • Mentor team members and serve as a technical escalation point for complex infrastructure issues.
  • Maintain up-to-date infrastructure documentation, including diagrams, standards, and procedures.
  • Contribute to IT policies, procedures, and change management practices.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for after-hours support and incident response.
  • Travel to branch or remote sites as required to support infrastructure deployment or troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 6–8+ years of experience in systems administration with at least 3 years in AWS-based environments.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft 365, Windows Server, Active Directory, and cloud identity tools.
  • Experience with backup tools such as Veeam and monitoring platforms like PRTG or CloudWatch.
  • Familiarity with SIEM/logging tools and patching/vulnerability management.
  • PowerShell or scripting experience preferred.
  • Certifications such as AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, CompTIA Security+/Network+, Microsoft SC-300/MD-102, or equivalent are considered assets.
