The Grande Prairie Police Service is looking for a dedicated Senior System Administrator to join the team.
Position Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior System Administrator to join our dynamic IT team in GPPS. At GPPS, we have a "cloud first" strategy and are transitioning into municipal police at a fast pace and we are building technology infrastructure from ground up! This is an exciting and unique opportunity! You will be responsible for designing, installing, maintaining and optimizing hardware and software relates to technology infrastructure. Your role will involve collaborating with various departments to provide technical support, troubleshooting issues, implementing necessary upgrades, and overseeing all aspects of technology infrastructure to meet the growing demands of our business.
- Design, maintain and support all aspects of technology infrastructure including network, server, security, radio, etc.
- Design, install, maintain and support hardware and software for network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewall, battery backups, WAN, VLAN, Wi-Fi, indoor and outdoor wireless network, Internet services, Point to point, VoIP, QoS configuration, VPN, video surveillance, bodycam and other technology services.
- Manage storage area network (SAN), SAN fabric and virtualization, applications servers, databases, load balancers, monitor server systems performance and capacity, design and implement hardware and software for upgrades and expansion, and oversee vendor installation and software licenses.
- Manage hardware, licenses, configure, test, troubleshoot and support M365 services like Microsoft Active Directory Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, etc to foster effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide advanced technical analysis, install, maintain and support hardware and software to safeguard network, protect the digital assets and enhance overall cybersecurity posture. Develop security policies, guidelines, standards and deliver security awareness programs.
- Lead development of disaster recovery, business continuity and coordinate audit, penetration testing.
- Install, configure, test and troubleshoot hardware and software related to AFRRCS radio and RoIP system, and support first responders including GPPS and Grande Prairie fire department.
- Perform regular maintenance tasks, including updates, patches, configuration changes, monitoring, analyzing and troubleshooting.
- Provide technical support to end-users, diagnosing and resolving infrastructure-related problems in a timely manner.
- Mentor and coach junior staff on infrastructure related tasks without direct supervision responsibility. Collaborate with other IT team members to ensure seamless integration of infrastructure components with other systems.
- Act as project manager or subject matter expert, and assist in the planning and execution of infrastructure upgrades and expansions to accommodate business growth.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of configurations, processes, and procedures.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in infrastructure administration.
- Participate in on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical infrastructure issues.
- Be flexible, adaptable to changing priorities, and be comfortable to learn and perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications- Degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field; relevant certifications (e.g., Cisco CCNA, CCNP, CCISP, CCIE, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Server+, CompTIA Security+, MCSA/MCSE, Cisco Certification) preferred.
- Project management and IT framework trainings and certificates including PMI, PRINCE2, ITIL, COBIT an asset.
- Proven experience (minimum 6 years) as a Network Administrator, Server Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst or a similar technical role.
- Extensive working knowledge of core technologies: network, servers, storage, data center, firewall, data protection, virtualization, active directory, authentication, video surveillance, cloud and unified communication technologies.
- Strong knowledge of network protocols, IP networking, routing, switching, subnetting, server and database management, security principles and best practices, server patching, hardening, and network and security monitoring.
- Extensive working experience with current major brand networking devices like Meraki, major brand firewalls technologies like Check Point & Fortinet, virtualization like VMWare, network monitoring tool like Solarwinds.
- Extensive experience to configure and maintain IIS servers for web services, create, manage and troubleshoot databases. Solid working knowledge in SQL Server and SQL scripting, PowerShell scripting, SSIS packages, etc.
- Extensive working knowledge of M365 product suite including Azure and on-prem active directory, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint & Exchange Online, Teams Telephony (including VoIP and SIP Trunk) and M365 security features and configurations.
- Extensive project experiences in network design and deployment, firewall upgrade, server migration, video surveillance upgrade, cybersecurity and incident response policies, disaster recovery plan and business continuity plan, and providing high-availability infrastructure.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail. Strong problem solving, prioritization, organizational skills to work independently with minimal supervision. Great interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

HoursThe standard workweek consists of an average of 37.5 hours, with the specific schedule being determined by the immediate supervisor.
CompensationThe hourly wage ranges from $50.31 to $65.03, with the final rate determined based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
