Responsibilities

PRIMARY PURPOSE

As a member of a multi-disciplinary Enterprise Sustainability Department, under the CFO, the Senior Sustainability Advisor – Adaptation and Resilience works across the Enterprise to develop, manage, and maintain an enterprise-wide, multi-year climate change adaptation and resilience program, executing related projects, and achievement of their goals and objectives. They support the Director and colleagues across the Enterprise develop and implement sustainability policies, strategies, frameworks, and standards across the Enterprise to reduce physical, financial and operational risks due to climate change. They work to ensure the climate adaptation and resilience program aligns with existing seismic, emergency management and business continuity programs. They are a champion of adaptation and resilience, by providing strategic advice to internal (e.g. Operating Companies) and external interest holders, and participating in climate change adaptation planning, risk and vulnerability assessments, developing infrastructure design standards and tools/frameworks for investment decision-making.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Supports the Director with TransLink’s sustainability and climate policies, strategies and frameworks (e.g. Sustainability Policy, Sustainability Framework, Climate Action Plan), as well as the Enterprise Sustainability Department’s five-year business strategy and annual workplan.

Leads the development of comprehensive climate change adaptation and resilience programs, policy, projects or initiatives while ensuring while ensuring enterprise-wide buy-in and alignment through the chairing of an Enterprise-wide working group. Works collaboratively with colleagues in finance, asset management, capital planning, engineering, operations, emergency management, business continuity, investment planning, transportation planning, and other functions to improve processes, standards, decision-making, internal culture and behavior change.

Provides subject matter expertise and guidance (e.g., reports, presentations) to senior executives, the Board, and Directors (e.g., Enterprise Sustainability, Finance, Engineering, Asset Management, Strategic Sourcing, Safety, Emergency Management, and the Operating Companies) on emerging climate change risks, vulnerabilities, trends, climate policy, best practices, regulations (regional, provincial, national), and develops recommendations based on research and analyses.

Identifies the required organizational/technical/financial capacity and capability for long term climate adaptation and resilience. Develops and implements policy/strategy/plans, identifies opportunities, performance indicators, critical projects/priorities.

Supervises, supports or conducts research, cost-benefit analyses, and risk assessments to support the adaptation and resilience plan, program, and strategic business decision-making.

Provides subject matter expertise (e.g., presentations, facilitation, training) to internal and external interest holders (regional, provincial, national, international) to advance adaptation and resilience planning, standard/guideline development, best practices, government policy/regulations, and shares knowledge/lessons learned particularly related to public transportation. Actively participates in various committees, working groups, and related peer networks and brings professional findings to the Enterprise.

Manages external consultants, and/or project manager(s) by providing work direction, monitoring contract compliance, internal relationships with other project teams, and providing input to performance management.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The requirements for this job are acquired through a bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, environment or sustainability, plus six (6) years of climate adaptation and/or resilience experience in (preferably) a large, complex organization.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Advanced knowledge of climate change adaptation, infrastructure and operational resilience, and related trends. Experience in adaptation and resilience of public transportation systems/networks would be an asset.

Advanced knowledge of climate change risk and vulnerability assessment processes (e.g., ISO, PIEVC), organizational climate adaptation, resilience planning and policies, and national and international best practices.

Solid knowledge of future climate change, climate change models, climate change projections, and the impacts (financial, environmental, social) on public transportation infrastructure, operations, customers, staff and regional systems.

Solid knowledge of integrating climate change adaptation and resilience into core business practices, investment decision-making, asset management, and change management.

Solid business acumen with emphasis on financial analysis, business strategy, management systems, policy development, interest holder engagement, and innovation.

Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, including knowledge of statistical principles and methods, to analyze data and derive conclusions and recommendations from that data.

Advanced interpersonal and communication skills (e.g., presentations, facilitation, training), including chairing working groups, and providing specialized advice and guidance to senior executives, Board and other levels of the organization. Ability to work effectively in adaptive, cross-functional environments with changing requirements.

Basic knowledge of sustainability values, issues, principles, governance and management framework best practices in the public transportation sector.

Basic knowledge of emergency management, business continuity management, asset management, climate action, and greenhouse gas emissions management best practices in the public transportation sector.

Strong proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications, with experience in data collection, analysis, and performance monitoring.

Solid experience in project management, managing consultants, and establishing programs of work.

This position offers the flexibility of working both on-site and remotely within B.C.

Rate of Pay

The salary for this position ranges from $91,840 - $137,760 per annum. Actual salary offered will be based on education, experience, skills, and qualifications as they relate to the role.
