Job summary

The Tomlinson Group of Companies in Ottawa, Ontario, seeks a Senior Structural Engineer with 8+ years of experience to lead structural projects and manage a team of engineers and EITs. This role blends hands-on design with leadership, project oversight, and client coordination under the Ontario Building Code.

You will act as Engineer of Record, review and seal drawings, and ensure high-quality delivery across steel, wood, and reinforced concrete systems while mentoring junior staff and liaising

Qualifications

• 8+ years of relevant structural engineering experience.
• Experience supervising junior engineers.
• Experience in shoring and piling.
• Ontario P.Eng. registration is required.
• Experience with steel, wood and reinforced concrete design.
• Knowledge of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and structural analysis software.

Job description

We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer with a minimum of 8 years of professional experience in Ontario to lead structural projects and manage a team of engineers and EITs. This role combines hands‑on technical design with people leadership, project oversight, and client coordination. The successful candidate will be responsible for the structural design, analysis, and delivery of projects in compliance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and applicable CSA standards. This role will act as a technical authority while fostering professional growth and high‑quality delivery within the team.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assign, manage, and validate the work of junior staff.
• Act as the Engineer of Record.
• Provide structural analysis & design of various permanent structures and temporary systems such as deep excavation shoring, formwork, falsework, building shoring, bridge jacking, scaffolding, etc.
• Designing and drafting of the above mentioned permanent & temporary systems to Ontario Building Code, Canadian standards, and local requirements as applicable.
• Review and seal structural drawings, calculations, and reports in accordance with PEO requirements.
• Oversee quality control and technical accuracy of deliverables.
• Assist with value engineering services for alternative design solutions to achieve the construction schedule and/or reduce cost.
• Conduct condition assessments of existing structures.
• Perform site inspections and issue stamped field visit reports confirming compliance with design documents.
• Provide on‑site technical support to project teams as required.
• Incorporate all relevant design requirements relating to building permits, environmental regulations, sanitary & drainage design, and safety on all work assignments.
• Provide technical input during proposal development and tendering.
• Communicate and liaise effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, consultants, suppliers, and clients.

REQUIREMENTS

• Must have at least 8 years of relevant experience.
• Must have experience supervising junior engineers.
• Experience in shornig and piling is required.
• Experience in bridge construction is an asset.
• Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of Ontario.
• Experience in steel, wood, and reinforced concrete design.
• Extensive knowledge of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.
• Experience using AutoCAD and various structural analysis programs such as SAP2000, DeepEx, Hilti Profis, etc.
• Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION

• The expected range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000 annually. Placement within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including qualifications and experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work in both an office setting as well as travelling to various sites across Ottawa and Eastern Ontario
• Must have a valid Ontario driver’s license
