Your Opportunity

Stantec has an immediate need for a talented, team-focused Senior Structural Engineer - Team Leader to join our highly successful water practice in Calgary, AB. This role will be tasked with leading and building a structural team within the water group in Alberta, with support from the Structural North American Discipline Lead and Structural Team Lead. As a Senior Structural Engineer, your role is to lead the structural design on a variety of hydraulic structure projects, including large high-profile projects both locally and across North America. This role will lead and manage projects as a Structural Team Lead (STL) and Project Manager (PM), mentoring younger engineers and EITs. You will be responsible for preparing designs and ensuring the development and delivery of successful structural projects for a variety of both new construction and rehabilitation designs of hydraulic, environmental, industrial, and general structures. The Senior Structural Engineer will act as an advisor, be engaged in Quality Control (QC) and Independent Technical Reviews (ITR), and be actively involved in meeting schedules and resolving problems to successfully deliver projects. Typical design projects may include large water retaining structures, pumping stations, tanks, wastewater facilities, dams, riser structures, and other water-related structures. This position will be responsible for managing projects related to scope development, schedule, and integration of other disciplines, CADD, subconsultants, and junior structural engineers. It is expected that the Senior Structural Engineer supports business development, client management, and the development of proposals and cost estimates, in addition to the planning, design, and direction of structural engineering projects.

Your Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead an engineering team responsible for the development of complex structural systems and provide supervision and review of junior/intermediate engineers/designers.
  2. Lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owners, contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.
  3. Participate in client project requirement meetings, value analysis, and cost estimating.
  4. Assist with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
  5. Lead the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.
  6. Design a variety of hydraulic, environmental, and industrial projects of varying size and complexity.
  7. Review and seal projects, including QC and ITR tasks.
  8. Act as a technical resource or subject matter expert, providing guidance to team members.
  9. Ensure adherence to the Quality Management Plan for all client submittals.
  10. Assist in developing standards and specifications for the structural group across Canada.
  11. Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong knowledge of structural design codes, standards, and applicable building codes.
  • Experience with hydraulic structures design.
  • Strong understanding of structural systems, materials, and industry standards.
  • Mentoring experience with junior engineers and EITs.
  • Heavy civil construction field experience, overseeing water/wastewater infrastructure projects, and collaborating with contractors.
  • Understanding of project document production, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to review work for accuracy, manage time, and meet project schedules.
  • Collaborative team engagement and creative/critical thinking skills.
  • Effective communication of structural engineering concepts.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; Revit, AutoCAD, and structural analysis software experience are assets.
  • Minimum 10-15 years’ experience in structural design and construction of reinforced concrete, steel, masonry, and large water structures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or related field; PE license or eligibility is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
