Senior Stop Smoking Advisor - Band 4

Yorkshire Smokefree Calderdale have an exciting opportunityfor a 30 hour band 4 role for a one year fixed term contract, starting from thedate of recruitment, with the focus on smoking and mental health. This post isfunded through the government grant (Stopping the Start), additional fundinggiven to local authorities to support current smokers to quit smoking.

The successful applicant will have experience of working ina community mental health setting and be able to demonstrate a desire to workin the stop smoking service with this cohort of clients. Training will be givento enable you to meet the demands of the post.

Main duties of the job

The main aim of this post is to undertake activities to increasethe number of smokers using mental health services to access support to quit.

The successful applicant will have experience of providinghelp, support or counselling and have skills in behaviour change techniques. Youwill manage your own workload and clinics, delivering stop smoking support toclients in community settings, both face to face and telephone. You will haveexcellent communication skills, enabling you to work alongside partner servicesto support delivery of training to promote the service and the benefits ofquitting.

With a background in mental health services, you will useyour knowledge and skills to support smokers through their quit journey,liaising with the relevant services, and provide on-going support to staystopped on discharge from hospital. You will act as a source of information andadvice for the team regarding mental health services and contribute to theevaluation of this work.

Qualifications
  • GCSE level English and Mathematics or equivalent
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent in health related studies OR substantial
  • successful experience of delivering stop smoking interventions in a range of settings
Physical Attributes
  • Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post. A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to the need to act with fairness and equality of opportunity, particularly where the sickness is related to a disability and/or pregnancy).
Training
  • Smoking Cessation Training Level 2 delivered by an NHS Stop Smoking Service or the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (or to undertake within 3 months of starting in post)
  • Willing to undertake training and development as required to carry out duties of the post
  • Specific training on healthy lifestyle activities e.g. healthy eating, physical activity etc.
  • Motivational interviewing training
Personal Attributes
  • A Current driving licence and access to a car during the working day is essential (reasonable adjustments will be considered for any applicants who are unable to drive due to a disability)
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours when team / service requires including evenings and weekends
  • Current non-smoker due to nature of post
  • Proven track record of reliability
Experience
  • Experience of providing help, support and/or counselling on a one to one or group basis
  • Ability to work and communicate in group settings.
  • Experience of providing healthcare, healthcare advice or health promotion advice to patients or members of the public
  • Significant experience in community development work or in working with people to change their behaviour
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office
  • software ie: Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Evidence of post-qualification stop smoking work
  • Experience of developing and delivering successful health promotion activities
  • Experience of working in Primary and secondary care settings
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Demonstrate understanding of human behaviour in relation to making healthy lifestyle changes
  • Good knowledge and understanding of evidence based practice in smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking and the benefits of quitting
