Role Description

The Mechanical Engineering team at Form is responsible for designing the battery cell, module, and system enclosure that forms the foundation of our innovative utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. We strive to deliver designs that are optimized for performance, quality, reliability, and cost for high-volume manufacturing at Form Factory.

We're seeking a Senior Staff Mechanical Architect to join our team and lead mechanical architectural efforts for crucial parts of our iron-air batteries! You'll play a crucial role in the concept generation and mechanical definition of our system, assemblies and components. In this role you'll rely upon strong engineering fundamentals and broad technical expertise to ensure performant and optimized mechanical architecture for our future iron-air battery systems. You will interface closely with our advanced product development, mechanical design, systems engineering, analysis & modeling, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to ensure product requirements are met while optimized for performance, cost, manufacturability and reliability. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of scaling our multi-day energy storage system at Form and contributing to a sustainable future. If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, apply now!

What you'll do:
  • Create white-page designs that will be the foundation of Form Energy's future product

  • Work with cross-functional engineering teams to develop system level architectural & interface diagrams, FMEA, mass rollups, cost estimates, assembly process flows

  • Iterate on initial design concepts with feedback from simulation, prototype validation, and field learnings

  • Select and size key elements of our sub-systems (structural, thermal, fluid, etc.)

  • Identify and implement enabling technologies and suppliers to advance development of our batteries

  • Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with design teams to build integrated prototypes

  • Work with consulting companies, vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to implementation ready state

  • Run and analyze trials to inform specs and future design direction

  • Drive verification testing of your design work

What you'll bring:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 12+ years of industry experience

  • Experience leading design work for complex mechanical and fluid systems

  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD, ideally Solidworks)

  • Proficiency FEA or CFD is a plus

  • Proficient in design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA)

  • Hands-on experience with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment

  • Familiarity with mechanical verification testing
