The Senior Specialist is responsible for assisting the Manager and other team members in delivering the operational goals for the Prevention team. Most notably, the Senior Specialist will be integral in advancing preventive care and chronic disease initiatives in Ontario. To be successful, the Senior Specialist must have expertise and experience in scanning and assessing large bodies of evidence (including academic and grey literature), and synthesizing findings into system-level recommendations in reports, briefing notes, presentations, and other products. Additionally, the Senior Specialist will require strong project management expertise, and will be the main point of contact for multiple stakeholders.

The Senior Specialist will work closely with the Manager and other team members to help plan and deliver evidence-based initiatives to address chronic disease prevention. This may include initiatives such as a digital prevention and screening resource hub, diabetes initiatives, clinical supports in Primary Care Networks, and other initiatives as opportunities arise. The ideal candidate will have a passion for chronic disease prevention and population health, and will be knowledgeable about policies, programs and health system factors related to chronic disease risk factors.

The Senior Specialist will be part of the Population Health and Prevention unit that monitors population-level prevention policies, oversees provincial programs, and generates high-quality information and tools for reducing risk factors for cancer and other chronic diseases.

Here is what you will be doing:

• Plan, lead, and execute key activities in preventive care and chronic disease initiatives, including:
• Driving the conceptualization, development, implementation, and management of projects, including developing and adhering to a workplan, identifying risks and solutions, etc.
• Supporting and providing guidance to other team members
• Acting as key point of contact for engaging experts
• Promoting products to relevant stakeholders, including presentations to brief project sponsors, organizational leaders, and external stakeholders
• Lead content development for evidence products, program resources (patient and provider), etc.
• Lead literature searches and evidence scans in new/emerging areas related to chronic disease prevention as the need emerges, to inform the Prevention team’s work
• Develop and present materials using excellent written, verbal and graphical communications skills.
• Develop and deepen relationships with existing internal and external chronic disease prevention stakeholders.
• Provide input and support the Manager/project leads in project support, e.g., developing project timelines, templates, identifying/monitoring project issues and proposing potential solutions.
• Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses to support project and/or program goals, as required.

Here is what you will need to be successful:

Education and Experience

• Undergraduate degree in a related discipline (public health, health administration, business administration, etc.)
• Master’s degree is an asset
• 3-6 years of related work experience, ideally in chronic disease prevention, and upstream system-level prevention policies
• Experience leading projects in a multi-stakeholder environment, including developing timelines, identifying risks/mitigation strategies, managing multiple deadlines and accountabilities, etc.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of chronic disease prevention, social determinants of health and population health
• Strong knowledge and experience conducting literature reviews (academic and grey literature) and evidence appraisal
• Experience in synthesizing clear and concise recommendations based on a large and complex body of evidence
• Strong oral and written communication skills, including ability to clearly communicate complicated ideas to different audiences
• Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Interest and experience in addressing health equity
• High attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
• Highly motivated self-starter, with a desire to make an impact on the health of Ontarians
• Team player that contributes to a supportive and positive working environment
