Job summary

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is seeking a Senior Specialist, Credit to provide expert credit opinions on large borrowers, identify risks and offer recommendations for CMHC’s insurance business. You will mentor junior team members and advise senior management on risk indicators and mitigation strategies.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or Accounting.
  • 7+ years of experience in financial risk management with demonstrated credit risk expertise.
  • Ability to independently assess complex credit scenarios with sound judgment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; strategic thinking under pressure.
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and standards.
  • Familiarity with credit risk management frameworks, policies, and methodologies.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the subject matter expert and coach and mentor members of the team.
  • Establish financial review and monitor framework on large borrowers and provide subject matter expertise to internal & external clients.
  • Perform complex financial analyses and manage the end-to-end credit review process, guiding internal clients on financial aspects.
  • Work closely with external clients and counterparties, reviewing borrower financials and preparing recommendations for credit committee approval.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies and industry best practices.
  • Ensure systems are in place for effective credit risk analysis, monitoring and reporting.
  • Develop and support policies, methodologies, procedures, analytical modelling and risk management information systems.
  • Develop and deliver seminars for various internal/external stakeholders.

About The Role

Join the Multi-Unit Borrower Financial Analysis (MUBFA) team, in the Senior Specialist, Credit position. In this role, you will provide credit opinions on large borrowers by identifying, analyzing, and assessing associated risks, and offering recommendations regarding CMHC’s continued insurance business. You will mentor and coach junior members of the team by providing guidance on large borrowers with complex organizational structures and elevated risks. You will also advise the senior management on key risk indicators at the portfolio level and recommend active mitigation strategies accordingly considering all relevant business and risk factors.

What You’ll Do
  • Act as the subject matter expert and coach and mentor members of the team.
  • Establish financial review and monitor framework on large borrowers and provide subject matter expertise to internal & external clients.
  • Perform complex financial analyses and manage the end-to-end credit review process, while providing guidance to internal clients on financial aspects, such as financial reviews, credit analysis, risk management policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with external clients and counterparties, reviewing borrower financials submitted by lenders and preparing recommendations for credit committee approval.
  • Ensure that the functional business unit is compliant with corporate policies and follows industry best practices.
  • Ensure that appropriate systems are in place for effective and efficient credit risk analysis, monitoring and reporting.
  • Develop and support the development of policies, methodologies, procedures, analytical modelling and risk management information systems.
  • Develop and deliver seminars for various internal/external stakeholders.
What You Should Have
  • An undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or Accounting.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in financial risk management, with demonstrated expertise in credit risk assessment and mitigation. This includes strong knowledge of commercial mortgage lending practices, real estate market dynamics, underwriting standards and guidelines, loan structuring, portfolio analysis, collateral valuation, and risk exposure assessment.
  • A proven ability to independently assess complex credit scenarios, applying deep industry knowledge and sound judgment to support decision-making.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to think strategically and respond effectively in high-pressure situations.
  • A solid understanding of accounting principles and standards, including their application in financial risk contexts.
  • Familiarity with credit risk management frameworks, policies, and methodologies used in regulated financial environments.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial concepts into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences, including senior leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a high level of professionalism, business acumen, and the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
It Would Be Great If You Also Had
  • A CPA, CFA or CIA professional designation.
  • A demonstrated Audit experience.
