Job description

Rush Street Interactive (NYSE: RSI) is a market leader in online casino and sports betting, currently operating real-money gaming with our brands: BetRivers.com, PlaySugarHouse.com, and RushBet.co. We’re building bridges between online, social and land-based gaming businesses to create amazing, integrated experiences that keep players in the game.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Services to play a foundational role in building the technology behind our digital experiences. This includes designing and building backend services, APIs, event processing systems, and integrations that enable analytics, lifecycle engagement, and downstream data systems.

The role goes beyond feature delivery, developing platform capabilities that support our broader modernization strategy while helping transition the existing delivery model by balancing BAU support with long-term architectural goals.

In addition to hands-on development, responsibilities include providing technical leadership, driving engineering best practices, and mentoring other engineers. The role requires deep backend engineering expertise combined with systems thinking, architectural discipline, and a strong appreciation for scalability, reliability, observability, and maintainability.

What You'll Do:
  • Lead Java backend development using Spring, Hibernate, Dropwizard, and related technologies, building scalable microservices for high-volume, highly available digital platforms.
  • Design and evolve RESTful APIs, service-to-service communication, and event-driven architectures using Kafka and asynchronous messaging.
  • Own resilient internal and third-party integrations, including retry handling, idempotency, monitoring, and operational support.
  • Manage event contracts and payload schemas with Product, Analytics, and Engineering, ensuring reliable, well-structured data for downstream CRM, lifecycle, reporting, and analytics systems.
  • Define platform-wide API governance, service contracts, versioning, and integration standards.
  • Support business-as-usual (BAU) operations while reducing technical debt, simplifying legacy processes, and modernizing architecture through service consolidation.
  • Deliver secure, high-performing, observable, and maintainable services through engineering best practices, automated testing, CI/CD, and production monitoring.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and long-term preventative improvements.
  • Lead design reviews, pair programming, and code reviews; mentor engineers and support hiring, onboarding, and career development.
  • Shape technical roadmaps with Engineering Managers and Architects, recommending direction and evaluating trade-offs using facts.
  • Evaluate emerging backend technologies, including AI-assisted development tools, to improve scalability, reliability, and productivity.
What You'll Bring:
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, with deep backend expertise and advanced Java proficiency using Spring, Hibernate, Dropwizard, or similar enterprise frameworks.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Systems is preferred.
  • Proven expertise in distributed systems, microservices, RESTful APIs, backend integrations, and event-driven architectures using brokers such as Kafka.
  • Experience designing scalable, highly available, secure, resilient, and fault-tolerant cloud-native systems.
  • Working knowledge of Postgres, Oracle, AWS, and infrastructure-as-code practices, plus hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Git-based workflows, and DevOps.
  • Strong observability skills across logging, monitoring, metrics, tracing, and production diagnostics.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions and architectural decisions across teams, balancing immediate delivery with long-term platform scalability.
  • Experience partnering with Engineering, Analytics, or BI teams in production and mentoring engineers in Agile environments using Scrum or Kanban.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills in English, communicating clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A self-starter mindset with strong ownership and accountability in complex, evolving environments.
  • Exposure to high-traffic, real-time, or transaction-heavy platforms; experience in regulated, high-volume, transaction-heavy environments involving customer/player data, payments, CRM, marketing technology, or real-time event processing is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with mobile application architecture and platform best practices.
  • Redis experience and a background in Data Analytics or Data Engineering are assets.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, domestically and internationally. #LI-REMOTE #LI-PROMOTE
