Job description

Join to apply for the Senior Software Engineer (Ruby) role at Nexl

Nexl is the fast‑growing LegalTech company on an ambitious mission to elevate the business of law.

We build an AI‑driven CRM and growth intelligence platform that brings a firm’s internal and external data together so lawyers, marketing, and business development can collaborate, spot opportunities, and grow revenue.

Recognised by the Financial Times, Deloitte, and the Australian Financial Review as one of the fastest‑growing businesses, Nexl is trusted by 150+ firms globally.

We’ve recently closed a $23 million USD Series B led by Tidemark Capital, accelerating our mission to transform how law firms grow by uniting lawyers, marketing, and business development into a single growth engine.

The Opportunity

We’re growing our global engineering team and looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong Ruby on Rails experience who wants to build, ship, and shape a global SaaS product used and loved by leading law firms around the world.

You’ll be our first engineer based in North America (our current engineering hub is in Sydney), and you’ll play a meaningful role in helping expand our global presence and technical capability. This is a unique opportunity to join a fast‑growing company at an inflection point, with the autonomy to influence how we build, how we scale, and how we deliver value to customers.

While your strength is in Ruby on Rails, you’ll work across the full stack to deliver end‑to‑end product experiences as part of a collaborative, cross‑functional squad.

We’re looking for engineers with strong technical depth, product intuition, and a high level of ownership — people who raise the bar, embrace AI in their workflow, and enjoy solving problems all the way through to impact.

What You’ll Own & Do:
  • Build backend services and product features using Ruby on Rails
  • Deliver full‑stack features as required using React/TypeScript
  • Improve performance, scalability, and reliability across Rails services
  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve issues across the stack
  • Collaborate closely with Product & Design to shape thoughtful solutions
  • Contribute to system design, architecture, and technical direction
  • Use AI tools to accelerate development, testing, and root‑cause analysis
  • Mentor engineers and help lift engineering maturity across the team
What We’re Looking For:

Must haves:

  • Strong experience with Ruby on Rails
  • Experience scaling backend systems in production
  • Ability to independently solve complex technical problems
  • Strong understanding of reliability, APIs, and performance
  • Experience debugging production issues and improving observability
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Understanding of security best practices (auth, access control, data protection)
  • Ability to take ownership, operate autonomously, and drive outcomes
  • Growth mindset + a desire to constantly raise the bar
  • Fluency using AI tools as part of your engineering workflow
Nice to haves:
  • Experience in multi‑tenant, data‑heavy applications
  • Experience with GraphQL, gRPC, or real‑time communication protocols (WebSockets)
  • Exposure to AI/LLM application development
  • Experience working in cross‑functional squads
  • Exposure to React Native or Python
  • Familiarity with Marketing Tech, CRM‑like systems, or workflow automation products
  • Experience in LegalTech or Professional Services tech
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices, Infrastructure as Code or cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure)
  • Experience mentoring engineers or influencing engineering culture
  • Experience in early‑stage or scale‑up environments
Life at Nexl
  • High growth. A scaling environment with autonomy, ownership, and visible impact.
  • ESOP. Employee stock options so you share in the upside.
  • Tools & tech. Modern, AI‑first ways of working to help you move faster and smarter, plus a work laptop.
  • Birthday leave. Take a paid “Nexl Day” during the week of your birthday.
  • Transparent by default. Fortnightly all‑hands with strategy, metrics, wins, and learnings.
  • Purposeful connection. Team offsites and meet‑ups.
  • Values‑led culture. Guided by The Nexler Way, our values and operating principles that define who we are, how we work, and how we win together.
Our Values
  • Committed to Care – We genuinely care about the work we do and the industry we do it for
  • Human at the Core – Relationships and empathy guide everything we do
  • Different with Purpose – We’re not afraid to stand out. We innovate boldly and deliberately

Even if you don’t tick every box, if you’re excited about our mission, we’d love to hear from you.
