Senior Software Engineer, Full-stack ML & Geo Data

About the Team

The AI & Data team builds and maintains computer-vision & machine-learning pipelines to automate the design of residential solar systems. We also manage the satellite imagery and lidar data sources that feed into these pipelines and other areas of the Aurora application. Ultimately, our work empowers customers to build more solar faster. We are a tight-knit group that prioritizes mutual respect and shared learning opportunities.

About the Role

In this role, you’ll provide full-stack development support, focusing on maintaining and improving our machine-learning infrastructure and geographic (“geo”) data services for fast and accurate solar designs. You’ll collaborate with machine-learning and geo experts, with opportunities to learn and contribute to our computer-vision pipelines.

Your Impact

1. Maintain and improve backend infrastructure for ML and Geo systems, including evaluation, regression, test coverage, dataset storage & organization, model training & serving, and imagery & 3D data processing.
2. Develop and deploy intuitive frontend features, and share your expertise by providing guidance on teammates' projects.
3. Take ownership of team services, including participating in our on-call rotation to ensure our systems are always running smoothly.
4. Contribute your talents to the development of our cutting-edge machine-learning pipeline, actively participating in code reviews and process improvements that keep us at the forefront of innovation.
5. Guarantee the reliability of our application through automated tests and debugging.
6. Power our sustainable energy culture by building tools that make solar design more accurate and accessible, directly contributing to Aurora's mission of a solar-powered future.

What You Bring

1. Academic background or equivalent skills in computer science or a related field, providing a solid foundation for your contributions.
2. 3+ years of hands-on experience with Python and backend web development (such as Ruby on Rails), showcasing your ability to build robust and scalable systems.
3. 1+ years of experience with GraphQL.
4. Familiarity with computer vision & machine learning concepts.
5. Demonstrated skills in design, development, technical documentation, architecture, build systems, code refactoring, and testing, showcasing your commitment to writing clean, efficient, and well-tested code.
6. Effective communication skills, including: describing complex concepts in a clear manner, providing concise project updates to the team, providing actionable comments in code reviews.
7. Effective collaboration skills in pairing with other developers, jointly developing a project proposal, and code reviews.
8. Strong alignment with Aurora's values and a passion for being a part of the renewable energy revolution.

Nice to Haves

1. Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Git, PostgreSQL, or Docker.
2. Experience deploying and maintaining ML infrastructure in production.
3. Experience working with geospatial data pipelines (e.g. imagery and lidar).

What We Offer

2. Parental Leave - 16 weeks with 100% base salary + gradual return to work.
3. WFH Stipend - An initial $675 CAD(Non-engineers) or $1000 CAD (Engineering roles).
4. Coworking Stipend - $400 CAD / month if you prefer to be at a coworking facility near you.

6. Connectivity Stipend - Up to $125 CAD / month towards internet or phone.
7. Learning & Development - $970/annually to use towards professional development (You have to complete 90 days of employment to receive this stipend).
8. Medical, Dental, and Vision - Aurora will cover 100% of premiums for employee-only and dependent coverage of our supplemental medical, dental, and vision plans.
