Job summary

Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the SciComp team to build robust, scalable software powering scientific initiatives. You will contribute to the full software lifecycle with a focus on reliability, modularity, and engineering excellence.

You will design and deploy services, integrate ML inference, hardware interfaces, and data pipelines, while maintaining high availability and low latency.

Qualifications

  • MSc or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Extensive experience as a Software Engineer with Python and scalable distributed systems in production.
  • Experience designing/managing complex systems with scalable data infrastructure, hardware interfaces, and ML models; APIs defined via REST/gRPC.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and reproducible workflows.
  • Strong ability to communicate design and architecture to multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

Your Role:

At EIT we are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our SciComp team. In this role you will build robust, scalable software systems that power EIT’s scientific initiatives and contribute to the full software lifecycle, ensuring our technology stack is reliable, modular, and built to the highest engineering standards.


Your Responsibilities:


  • Design and build robust services(APIs,CLI toolsand software modules)that power scientific applications and products.

  • Bridge diverse components, integrating ML inference servers, hardware interfaces, and data pipelines into cohesive systems, while ensuring high availability and low latency.

  • Own the full production path—from architectural design and coding to automated testing, benchmarking, deployment, and observability.

  • Collaborate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team of Data Engineers, AI Scientists, Software Engineers and Domain Experts.

  • Champion software engineering best practicesacross EIT,such asmaintaininghighstandardsof code quality, system security, and transparency.


Essential Skills, Qualifications & Experience:


  • MSc or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • Extensive experience as a Software Engineer, with required proficiency in Python, including proven success in implementing and deploying robust, scalable distributed systems in production.

  • Demonstrated experience designing, managing, and orchestrating complex systems involving scalable data infrastructure, hardware interfaces, and machine learning models. Expertise in defining and exposing functionality via clean, well-documented APIs (e.g., REST, gRPC).

  • Proven experience implementing and managing robust CI/CD pipelines and reproducible development workflows.

  • Strong collaborator able to clearly communicate system design, architecture decisions, and software engineering practices to multi-disciplinary teams.


Desirable Skills, Qualifications & Experience:


  • Experience leveraging Kubernetes for application deployment, and familiarity with distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Ray, Spark), or specialised batch schedulers/resource managers (e.g., Slurm, Volcano, Kueue).

  • Demonstratedexpertisewith specialised serving engines (e.g.,vLLM,SGLang) or techniques for deploying models in resource-constrained or high-throughput environments.

  • Familiarity withGitOpsand CI/CD (e.g.,ArgoCD,GitHubActions).

  • Experience managing and deploying production systems across diverse environments, including cloud, on-premises clusters, and edge devices.

  • Proven ability to thrive in fast-paced, dynamic R&D settings, demonstrating high autonomy necessary to translate scientific objectives into high-quality software.

Working Together – What It Involves:


  • You must have the right to work permanently in the UK with a willingness to travel as necessary. In certain cases, we can consider sponsorship, and this will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • You will live in, or within easy commuting distance of, Oxford/London(or be willing to relocate).

  • The SciComp team work to a hybrid working pattern of 3 days in the office, 2x in our Oxford Office and 1x in our London office. You must be able to commit to this should you be successfully appointed.
