Job summary

Investigative Journalism Foundation seeks a Senior Software Developer focused on data and infrastructure in a remote-capable role. You will own the data pipelines, databases, and AI classification systems powering public-interest databases used by researchers and journalists.

You will work on Local News Finder with AI-assisted classification and expand to additional databases, with an emphasis on scale, reliability, and transparent data provenance across Ontario and Quebec.

Qualifications

• Own production systems end-to-end, from design to deployment and maintenance.
• Strong Python experience in production, plus data pipelines and third‑party APIs.
• Strong PostgreSQL skills including schema design and migrations.
• Hands‑on experience deploying apps on AWS.
• Production experience with React, Next.js and TypeScript.
• Experience with LLM APIs, prompt engineering or model evaluations is a plus.
• Clear written and verbal communication with non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfortable working autonomously on a small team.
• Excitement about building tools for journalists and public interest.

Responsibilities

• Build, deploy and operate data pipelines on the cloud.
• Design databases behind the tools, with data provenance in mind.
• Create internal tools for partners and reviewers.
• Extend and improve AI classification pipelines and evaluation harnesses.
• Contribute to public-facing interfaces for databases.
