Hours of Work:

The successful candidates must be available to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including both days and evenings.

Retention Bonus: This position includes a retention bonus structured as follows:

  • $500 after six months of employment
  • An additional $500 after 12 months
  • An additional $1,000 after 18 months

Good Shepherd Centres' Barton-Tiffany Emergency Shelter provides temporary accommodation to individuals and 2-person households who face exceptional barriers to accessing traditional shelter programs and/or sustainable housing. This housing-focused program offers private, self-contained units for residents (and their pets) on a site owned by the City of Hamilton.

We are currently seeking Senior Emergency Shelter Support Workers to support residents in this innovative shelter environment. Senior Shelter Workers provide intensive, adaptive services to residents with complex barriers to finding and sustaining housing in the community.

How You Will Make an Impact

Reporting to the Senior Program Manager, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team to maintain a safe, hospitable environment and to support residents in establishing and achieving plans that will assist them in optimizing their quality of life and achieving housing stability in the community.

This role includes working with the Senior Program Manager in the development and implementation of enhanced support frameworks to improve shelter operations.

Ideal candidates will bring several years of progressive experience in crisis intervention and housing-focused case management. Demonstrated skill in supporting people impacted by housing instability, poverty, social isolation, mental health issues and substance use is essential.

In this role you will:

  • Support individuals, couples and people with pets who are unhoused in a unique shelter setting.
  • Leverage your professional skills, experience and creativity to provide housing-focused case management services anchored in the principles of Housing First.
  • Use your skills and experience to offer crisis intervention, strengths-based supports, and a range of services including referral, advocacy and supportive counselling to assist clients in achieving their goals
  • Demonstrate professionalism, as well as excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Utilize your knowledge of homelessness, poverty, trauma, mental health issues, substance use, and gender-based violence in offering safe, accessible and respectful care
  • Provide services and supports that are grounded in harm reduction, trauma-informed, anti-racist, anti-oppressive frameworks
  • Provides peer support, helps address day-to-day shelter operations, and assists with training and onboarding of Shetler Emergency Workers, as directed by the Senior Manager.
  • Observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules and work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience (or a combination of education and experience) in the housing and homelessness sector, with a focus on residential settings.
  • A diploma or degree in a social services-related field.
  • Advanced crisis intervention skills and experience, and in-depth knowledge / experience of mental health and addiction support
  • Ability to work in a lower - barrier, housing-focused shelter environment with women, men transgender and non-binary adults - both singles and couples.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide services to individuals impacted by poverty, trauma, mental health issues and substance use within harm reduction, trauma-informed, anti-racist/anti-oppressive frameworks
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors and in an environment that accommodates pets/animal
  • A valid driver's license is an asset for this position.
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English an asset
