Overview

HSE Safety Specialist – Mechanical Construction. Hybrid Work Model - Ottawa

Position Overview

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented HSE Safety Specialist to oversee and implement health, safety, and environmental programs within our mechanical construction projects. The HSE Specialist will ensure compliance with regulatory standards, promote a culture of safety, and support project teams in maintaining safe work practices throughout all phases of construction.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and monitor HSE policies, procedures, and site-specific safety plans for mechanical construction projects.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure corrective actions are taken.
  • Provide safety training, toolbox talks, and orientation programs to employees, subcontractors, and visitors.
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal HSE regulations as well as company standards.
  • Lead incident investigations, prepare detailed reports, and recommend preventive measures.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate documentation of safety records, permits, and compliance reports.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to integrate safety into project planning and execution.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and act as a mentor/coach for site personnel.
  • Support emergency response planning, drills, and first aid readiness on-site.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging risks, and regulatory changes related to construction and mechanical systems.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3–5 years of HSE experience in the construction industry, preferably in mechanical, piping, or industrial projects.
  • Knowledge of OSHA / OHS / CSA standards and construction safety regulations.
  • Professional certifications, strong communication, leadership, and training skills.
  • Proficiency in incident reporting tools, Microsoft Office Suite, and safety management systems.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and proactive risk management.
