Senior Reservoir Engineer – Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently looking for a Senior Reservoir Engineer to join the Subsurface Geology and Geohazards team. The Senior Reservoir Engineer will collaborate with senior geologists to offer technical support in reservoir engineering for the characterization of oil and gas reserves, resources, and the geological pore space management program. The latter includes evaluation of reservoir properties related to disposal operations including carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

The role requires a deep understanding of reservoir engineering – the nexus of static rock properties with dynamic properties such as fluid type and pressure as a function of operations at the well-bore and reservoir scale. A key responsibility involves collaborating with geologists, seismologists, and geophysicists to support induced seismicity investigations. This role requires applying expertise to solve complex, poorly understood subsurface problems, fostering open collaboration, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous improvement. The Senior Reservoir Engineer will take a lead role in providing technical support and mentorship to staff across the organization and will be responsible for conducting technical reviews and offering constructive feedback to other technical experts.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Perform in an advanced technical role conducting strategic subsurface work designed to support geoscientific-subsurface engineering issues facing Alberta, which is guided by the AGS operational plan.

  • Provide engineering advice, guidance, and leadership on large multi-disciplinary projects which may span outside of immediate job area to support both short-term and long-term Branch or Division level decision making.

  • Deliver results through the publication of technical reports, maps, digital data, and peer-reviewed literature. Prepare findings for internal and external audiences including non-AER stakeholders, as well as Teams, Branches, and Divisions within AER.

  • Actively manage data acquired or produced during AGS project work. Works to ensure data and information is stored and described according to best-practice standards for re-use and is handled and protected after project is complete.

  • Offer reservoir engineering support and geological pore space management expertise to other branches in the AER through participation in AER projects or upon request.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to other engineers to solve undefined, complex problems in reservoir engineering.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.

  • 10+ years of progressive related experience in reservoir engineering or related Oil and Gas field of study; other technical training with equivalent levels of experience/expertise may be considered.

  • Registered professional engineer with APEGA or eligible for professional membership is required.

  • Knowledge of CCUS and reserve/resource characterization is required.

  • Understanding geological pore space issues as it relates to subsurface fluid flow (i.e. disposal, brine hosted minerals, and geothermal) in Alberta is an asset.

  • Familiarity of AER Directives 065 and 051, relating to injection / fluid disposal schemes, specifically experience with Measurement, Monitoring and Verification plans would be an asset.

  • Experience with produced fluids and/or acid gas disposal activities in Alberta and issues relating to compatibility, injectivity tests and surveillance, pressure monitoring, and pressure transient analysis is an asset.

  • Ability to solve undefined problems and effectively present and communicate complex technical information to diverse audiences.

  • Capability to adapt to changing priorities and timelines, manage multiple tasks, and lead risk-informed decision-making processes.

  • Proficiency in collaborating with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external.

  • Competence in sharing knowledge, teaching skills, and explaining concepts clearly.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.

  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email PeopleServices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Great benefits from your first day of work

  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours

  • Defined benefit pension plan(s)

  • Flexible benefits program options, including Personal & Health spending account(s)
