Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River is seeking a Research Technologist to provide advanced technical expertise, lead projects and teams, and support execution of key organizational objectives.

You will mentor staff, coordinate complex studies, supervise facilities, contribute to reports, ensure safe handling of materials, and develop experimental methods and data acquisition systems.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position or equivalent formal education and normally has more than fifteen (15) years of pertinent and progressive technological experience.
  • A diploma or degree from a recognized technical college with a specialization in electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, instrumentation technology, or related discipline preferred.
  • At least 15 years of relevant experience in performing the duties described.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, organizing, and conducting complete complex projects or studies and prepares reports; may be responsible for full research project or contract, requiring all aspects of project planning, management, reporting, and financial oversight.
  • Representing the company in technical discussions with other firms and organizations and acting as a consultant in a field of specialization, without reference to others.
  • Coordinating and participating with the customer in developing the final product, including generating written reports and presenting results.
  • Contributing sufficient value and scope to impact on CNL, project or group goals.
  • Participating in the research and development of advanced testing techniques and procedures.
  • Supervising a group of technical staff and/or responsibility for a major Branch facility.
  • Supervising others in the design and modification of test rigs, tools, assemblies, and components.
  • Conceptualizing, building/fabricating, assembling and instrumenting experiments often involving high temperatures, electrical power, high pressures and material deformation.
  • Learning new cutting-edge fabrication, instrumentations and data acquisition techniques and applies relevant techniques to experimental programs.
  • Keeping accurate records and notes of experiments and documents new designs.
  • Interpreting, storing and documenting results, and authoring or contributes to technical reports.
  • Defining requirements for procurement and/or manufacture of equipment and components for experiments.
  • Participating in work control process as Laboratory Supervisor (or designate), if assigned.
  • Acting as Area Owner for a laboratory as Laboratory Supervisor (or designate), if assigned.
  • Participating in work control process and ensure safety and housekeeping standards are maintained as a senior staff.
  • Safe handling of radioactive and fissile materials and accounting of fissionable inventory.
  • Operating and maintaining experimental facilities and equipment in the designated facility or facilities.
  • Depending on facility, may include pressurized systems, water treatment systems, gas supplies, steam supplies, fumehoods, mechanical equipment, data acquisition system(s), overhead cranes, and power supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
