Job summary

Desjardins seeks a senior Regulatory Affairs Advisor to help integrate regulatory considerations into business decisions. You will coordinate regulators, guide governance, and lead cross-sector initiatives while advising senior management.

A strong track record in the financial regulatory landscape and executive writing is essential. The role reports to the Director of Regulatory Affairs and supports Desjardins Group’s regulatory positions with regulators to maintain a competitive framework.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in law, finance, accounting, administration, economics or related field.
  • A minimum of eight years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in the financial industry, regulatory and prudential environment, governance and risk management.
  • Ability to lead strategic cross-sector initiatives and influence internal and external partners.
  • Strong written and oral communication in English; French may be required for Quebec positions.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor regulatory, prudential and sector developments to anticipate issues and coordinate Desjardins positions.
  • Advise and support sectors and partners in regulatory activities and governance.
  • Identify regulatory issues, make strategic recommendations, and support regulator interactions.
  • Develop and enhance regulatory governance frameworks, policies and tools.
  • Plan meetings, synthesize takeaways, and prepare clear analyses and recommendations.
  • Represent the unit on committees with senior management, providing forward-looking regulatory insights.
  • Lead and coach collaborators on complex regulatory initiatives.

Job description

The Regulatory Affairs Administrative Department is currently seeking a senior advisor who wants to contribute to a dynamic, evolving environment. The team’s mission is to support strategic decision-making by integrating regulatory considerations into business directions and representing Desjardins Group’s positions with regulators to help maintain a strong, efficient and competitive regulatory framework. You will provide cross-sector oversight on all activities involving regulators and inform the appropriate governing bodies about the latest developments, to promote greater consistency and alignment between the organizations and the regulators’ interests and expectations. As a senior regulatory affairs advisor reporting to the Director, Regulatory Affairs, you provide expert advice to the business sectors and support functions within your area of responsibility. You coordinate and support collaborators in their interactions with regulators, anticipate regulatory and prudential issues, as well as assess and manage organizational risks to ensure informed decision-making and the achievement of strategic objectives. More specifically, you will be required to:

  • Monitor regulatory, prudential and sector developments as well as peer practices, to anticipate issues and opportunities, assess their impact on the organization, and coordinate Desjardins’s positions and actions as part of regulatory consultations
  • Advise and support sectors and partners in planning and carrying out regulatory activities, coordinate strategic initiatives and interactions with regulators, and promote a shared understanding of regulatory expectations and a consistent management of issues
  • Identify and analyze regulatory, prudential and sector issues, make strategic recommendations, and support collaborators in their interactions with regulators to ensure consistent representations and the achievement of organizational goals
  • Develop and enhance regulatory affairs governance frameworks, policies, standards, processes and tools to support a consistent approach to managing regulatory interactions and issues (for example, governance framework, policy and manual for managing regulatory authority issues)
  • Plan and facilitate meetings, synthesize key takeaways, and prepare documentation to clearly communicate analyses and recommendations
  • Represent your unit on committees involving senior management and decision-making bodies by providing a holistic, forward-looking view of the regulatory environment, interactions with regulators, emerging issues and initiatives under your responsibility, while providing appropriate reporting and accountability
  • Represent the organization in dealings with regulators, sector associations and other external partners on the regulatory matters under your responsibility
  • Make recommendations for the development and delivery of initiatives or projects with a very high degree of operational and conceptual complexity
  • Lead and influence internal and external collaborators, including subject matter experts and executives, on development projects and highly complex initiatives involving multiple sectors
  • Serve as a go-to person and coach for senior management and decision-making bodies.

What you bring to the table
  • Bachelor's degree in law, finance, accounting, administration, economics or a related field
  • A minimum of eight years of relevant experience
  • Please note that other combinations of qualifications and relevant experience may be considered
  • Experience in and a strong understanding of the financial industry, the regulatory and prudential environment, and governance and risk management issues
  • Significant experience leading strategic, cross-sector initiatives that require influence-based leadership, consultation and collaboration with internal and external partners
  • Experience in complex environments requiring a strong ability to influence, collaborate, and advise contributors at various organizational levels
  • Knowledge of French is required for positions in Quebec
  • Intermediate advanced proficiency of English due to the nature of the duties or work tools or because the position involves interactions with English-speaking partners, members and/or clients
  • Proficiency in strategic and executive writing
