Job summary

The Sutherland Group of Companies seeks a Senior Operations Manager – Rail & Transload Operations to oversee contract performance, operational execution, and financial outcomes for rail transload and trucking services in Waneta and surrounding routes. Based in Trail, BC, you will coordinate with vendors, clients, and internal teams to ensure safety, reliability, and profitability.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of experience in transportation, logistics, heavy industry, or resource operations.
• Proven experience managing multi-site or contract-based operations.
• Strong financial acumen with P&L management experience.
• Knowledge of rail transload, bulk commodities, or trucking operations.
• Demonstrated leadership in safety-focused environments.
• On-site position based in the West Kootenays, BC; candidates must reside in the region or relocate.

Responsibilities

• Contract & Operational Management: Manage contractual relationships with subcontractors across rail transload and trucking operations; ensure compliance with service agreements, safety standards, and KPIs.
• Financial Performance (P&L): Maintain full P&L oversight for contracts, including revenue, costs and margins; identify variances against budget and protect profitability.
• Site & Asset Management: Ensure transload facilities and trucking yards are safe, organized and audit-ready; coordinate procurement as needed.
• Health, Safety & Compliance: Provide day-to-day safety oversight and ensure adherence to standards; reinforce compliance across operators and equipment usage.
• Leadership & Workforce Oversight: HR oversight for personnel on contracts; collaborate with Dispatch, Planning, Field Operations, Safety, and HR teams.
• Reporting & Communication: Deliver daily and weekly performance updates to Director of Operations; act as primary operational liaison between stakeholders and internal teams.
