Job description

Thompson Construction Group is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead and oversee major civil construction and earthworks projects in the Fort McMurray region. The ideal candidate will bring a proven track record of successfully managing large-scale projects in the construction or oil and gas sector. The Senior Project Manager, will be responsible for the strategic planning, execution, and completion of projects, ensuring high standards of safety, quality, budget control, and client satisfaction.

Responsibilities :

Project Leadership and Execution

  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of large-scale construction projects from pre-construction through completion.
  • Oversee project scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure alignment with business goals and contractual obligations.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to define project requirements and success criteria.

Team Management

  • Supervise and mentor project management staff, engineers, foremen, and site supervisors.
  • Provide leadership to cross-functional project teams, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Participate in workforce planning and resource allocation to meet project timelines and objectives.
  • Financial Management

  • Prepare and manage detailed project budgets, forecasts, and financial reports.
  • Review and approve cost estimates, change orders, and accruals, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project scope.
  • Oversee invoicing processes and ensure timely billing and payment tracking.
  • Scheduling and Reporting

  • Develop and maintain project schedules using Primavera or other scheduling software.
  • Ensure timely completion of project milestones, critical path activities, and project deliverables.
  • Prepare and deliver internal and external reports such as cost summaries, load count reports, daily LEMs, and volume tracking.
  • Client and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients on assigned projects.
  • Lead pre-tender, post-tender, and project start-up meetings with clients and key stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Risk and Compliance

  • Proactively identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations and internal policies.
  • Conduct regular job site visits to monitor progress, quality, and safety performance.
  • Strategic Input

  • Contribute to business development efforts, including the preparation of proposals and client presentations.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying lessons learned and best practices across projects.
  • Qualifications :

  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive project management experience in heavy civil construction, earthworks, or oil & gas projects.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (P.Eng. designation considered an asset).
  • Strong knowledge of construction methodologies, project controls, contract administration, and scheduling.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multidisciplinary teams on complex projects.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experienced in scheduling software such as Primavera P6.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Willingness to work in remote camp locations in the Fort McMurray area on a rotational schedule.
  • CSTS / OSSA or CSO certification required.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-access drug and alcohol test.
