Job description

Senior Project Engineer – Job Summary

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will be the key technical interface between engineering service providers, equipment suppliers, fabricators, and various stakeholders. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure technical solutions and designs are executed accurately and efficiently across your designated scopes. You’ll also travel to fabrication yards and the construction site as needed, helping to verify that the design intent is carried through during execution. At times, you may also provide temporary support for Field Engineers on site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure relevant internal stakeholders are made aware when RFPs are issued.

  • Work closely with the Project Quality Lead during RFP creation and technical evaluations, and notify them upon award to initiate quality assurance requirements, including pre-award shop audits.

  • Oversee engineering design processes to ensure delivery on cost, schedule, and quality targets.

  • Review and frequently approve engineering documents, project procedures, templates, and contract-related schedules at the project level.

  • Provide critical input into the development of Stage Gate Packages intended for sanctioning by both Owner and partner organizations.

  • Guide and review the creation of key project documents, including the Design Basis Memorandum (DBM), Project Execution Plan (PEP), and Construction Execution Plan (CEP).

  • Support regulatory submissions and ensure compliance with permit obligations.

  • Participate in cost estimating reviews and project schedule development.

  • Contribute to cost-saving strategies through alternative designs or execution methodologies.

  • Maintain project tracking logs (RFI, NCR, deficiencies, etc.).

  • Lead the development of bid packages for engineering, equipment, construction services, and materials.

  • Oversee technical bid evaluations and ensure scope and schedule alignment through coordination of Issued for Construction (EWP) packages with engineering providers.

  • Manage design changes to avoid unnecessary scope creep and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

  • Facilitate meaningful involvement from both internal teams and external stakeholders.

  • Assist the Project Manager with monitoring project cost and schedule performance.

  • Engage in risk assessment and mitigation efforts related to design, cost, and schedule impacts.

  • Capture and implement lessons learned to enhance execution strategies for future projects.

  • Provide oversight and input into the commissioning punch list system (e.g., CSU software), ensuring clear definitions of deficiencies and shared understanding across stakeholders.

  • Support the commissioning and startup team in resolving design-related technical issues.

  • Act as a liaison across project areas, ensuring integration and alignment.

  • Contribute to final project close-out activities.

  • Research emerging trends and best practices in engineering, proposing process improvements to senior leadership.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Licensee (P.L.Eng) designation with APEGA (or eligible).

  • 10–15 years of progressive experience in project engineering and/or project management roles.

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

  • Solid understanding of regulatory frameworks and design codes relevant to oil and gas projects in Alberta, BC, and the U.S. (e.g., ABSA, AER, BCOGC, TSBC, ASME, CSA, OH&S, OSHA).

  • Practical experience in gas processing infrastructure, including sour and sweet gas plants (cryogenic, fractionation), pipelines, LACT units, and rail terminals.

  • Broad technical expertise across various engineering disciplines.

  • Demonstrated success in both greenfield developments and brownfield upgrades.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Familiarity with project scheduling tools such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project.

  • Experience with Oracle JD Edwards or similar systems is an asset.

  • Willingness and ability to travel to field/project sites.

  • Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
