Van-Kam Freightways Ltd (Van Kam) is one of the largest regional carriers in Western Canada specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation. With 8 terminal locations across British Columbia, we fulfill shipments to communities within 1-3 days throughout BC and Alberta. Between our own resources and our partner network, our coverage extends beyond Western Canada into the U.S. and Eastern Canada.

We are currently seeking a Senior Programmer/Analyst to join our esteemed team based out of our Surrey Terminal. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in designing, developing, and maintaining software applications and systems. This entails close collaboration with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and devise innovative solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, excellent communication skills, project management skills and a steadfast commitment to supporting our mission of delivering freight in a safe and timely manner.

While JavaScript development is currently not a primary focus, this role will evolve as we move toward adopting JavaScript-based technologies, including the potential future use of the ProfoundJS product. The role will begin by working with our current systems and gradually transition to JavaScript programming.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Develop and Enhance Systems: Design and build new application programs while enhancing and modifying existing ones.
  • Troubleshooting & Support: Provide support in troubleshooting and creating solutions for existing application programs.
  • UI/UX Design: Design and program fully integrated user interfaces that are both functional and intuitive.
  • Documentation: Create clear and comprehensive documentation and user manuals to facilitate seamless user interaction with the system.
  • Server Maintenance: Oversee and monitor physical servers to ensure efficient and secure operation.
  • Coding Standards: Maintain high personal standards in coding and development to ensure the production of high-quality software.

What We’re Looking For:
  • Technical Expertise: Proficient in JavaScript, API, EDI, mobile applications, and web application development and a minimum of five years of professional experience as a Programmer/Developer.
  • Business Analysis Skills: Proven experience as a business analyst with the ability to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Educational Background: Degree or diploma in Computer Science from a reputable and accredited academic institution.
  • Certifications: Additional certifications in development and database management are an asset.
  • Experience: Proven experience in evaluating, planning, implementing, and supporting large-scale IT programs.
  • Communication Skills: Strong ability to communicate effectively with team members, stakeholders, and other departments.
  • Team Player: A collaborative mindset with a desire to grow in the role, take on more responsibilities, and advance into management.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • AS/400 & RPG Programming: Experience with AS/400 using RPG programming language and Profound UI development, or a strong willingness to learn these technologies.
  • Business Process Expertise: Knowledge of business requirements gathering, documentation, change management, and user training.
  • Transportation Management Systems: Previous experience with transportation management systems (TMS) is preferred.
