Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Product Manager, Payments Gateway based in Canada.

The Senior Product Manager, Payments Gateway will lead the strategy, development, and evolution of a scalable payment gateway powering secure, reliable business-to-business transactions. This role combines deep payments expertise with product leadership to improve transaction success rates, platform reliability, processing costs, and overall payment performance. You will define the product roadmap for a modular, multi-tenant platform connecting payment products with processors, acquiring institutions, card networks, and banking systems. Working closely with engineering, risk, compliance, finance, and go-to-market teams, you will drive technical decisions and deliver measurable business outcomes. You will also explore AI and machine learning applications to optimize payment workflows, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen platform intelligence. This remote opportunity is suited to an experienced payments product leader who enjoys building complex platforms, influencing strategic decisions, and scaling innovative solutions across international markets.

Accountabilities
  • Define and own the long-term strategy, vision, and roadmap for payment gateways supporting card payments, bank payments, and alternative payment methods across multiple markets.

  • Balance immediate product improvements with long-term platform investments, making clear prioritization decisions based on customer needs, business value, and technical considerations.

  • Own key gateway performance indicators, including authorization and payment success rates, decline rates, retry effectiveness, uptime, latency, and processing costs.

  • Improve payment performance through connection optimization, failover strategies, intelligent retries, network tokenization, account updater capabilities, 3-D Secure (3DS) authentication, and Level 2/Level 3 card data optimization.

  • Develop the gateway platform and its integration capabilities, including APIs, SDKs, hosted payment pages, webhooks, merchant configurations, and merchant identification number (MID) management.

  • Enable internal product teams and external partners to launch new payment experiences efficiently through scalable, reliable, and well-documented platform capabilities.

  • Lead the evaluation, certification, and implementation of processor, acquirer, and payment network integrations.

  • Translate payment network specifications and mandates into clear product requirements while maintaining compliance with PCI DSS, card network rules, and applicable regional regulations.

  • Oversee the complete transaction lifecycle, including authorization, capture, refunds, voids, disputes, chargebacks, settlement, and the accurate transfer of transaction data to ledger and reconciliation systems.

  • Collaborate with risk, compliance, and payment operations teams to ensure secure, compliant, and reliable payment processing.

  • Lead engineering teams and cross-functional delivery groups, defining requirements, setting priorities, removing blockers, and guiding execution from discovery through release and performance measurement.

  • Partner with engineering leadership on architectural decisions, platform reliability, scalability, and technical trade-offs while maintaining effective software development lifecycle practices.

  • Identify and implement opportunities to use AI, machine learning, large language models (LLMs), and agentic systems for retry optimization, decline analysis, anomaly detection, incident triage, and integration support.

  • Establish a clear approach to responsible AI adoption within payment workflows, balancing innovation with security, reliability, compliance, and financial risk.

  • Serve as the internal subject-matter expert on gateway architecture, payment processing, transaction networks, and payment regulations.

  • Communicate gateway strategy, performance, and investment priorities to senior leadership while educating internal teams and representing the platform in discussions with partners and customers.

Requirements
  • 6+ years of experience in payments or fintech product management, including at least 3 years owning a payment gateway, payment processing platform, orchestration solution, or payment service provider (PSP) platform end to end.

  • Demonstrated experience building, launching, or significantly scaling payment gateway capabilities in production, rather than solely integrating a third-party gateway.

  • Deep understanding of the end-to-end transaction lifecycle, including authorization flows, ISO 8583 messaging, tokenization, capture, settlement, chargebacks, interchange, and failover mechanisms.

  • Proven ability to improve payment performance metrics, with measurable results in authorization rates, transaction success, processing costs, uptime, or latency.

  • Experience with global payments across North America and international markets, including multi-currency processing and local payment methods.

  • Strong knowledge of relevant payment regulations and standards, including PCI DSS, PSD2, Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), and card network rules.

  • Experience leading engineering teams or product delivery squads, setting priorities, managing execution, resolving blockers, and making architectural trade-offs in partnership with engineering leadership.

  • Ability to translate complex technical requirements and payment network specifications into clear product strategies, requirements, and implementation plans.

  • Practical experience applying AI, machine learning, LLMs, or agentic systems to payment workflows, supported by a clear understanding of appropriate use cases, limitations, and risk considerations.

  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to use performance data to guide product decisions and demonstrate measurable outcomes.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence senior leadership, collaborate across technical and business functions, and explain complex payment concepts clearly.

  • A builder mindset, with a bias toward action, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to establish direction for new initiatives in a changing environment.

  • Strong ownership and accountability, with a focus on delivering reliable products, improving customer outcomes, and aligning product decisions with business objectives.

  • Work arrangement: Remote. The original posting lists the United States as the work location, while this opportunity is presented for Canada. Confirm Canadian hiring eligibility, location restrictions, and employment arrangements with the hiring team.

  • Employment type: Regular, full-time position.
