Job description

About Upstart

At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.

As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 1,800 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.

We’re proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City (opening Summer 2026), you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.

If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.

The Team

The Upstart Home Lending team is on a mission to dramatically scale our Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) business through 2027 and beyond. We’re building the fastest, simplest way for homeowners to access their home equity while delivering industry-leading rates, with a focus on increasing applicant conversion, reducing cost per loan, and maintaining the high risk standards required to support a healthy capital markets business.

Senior Product Manager, HELOC Decisioning

At Upstart, you will own the strategy and execution of our underwriting and verification experience, helping more qualified borrowers access HELOCs with less friction and better rates. You'll partner across engineering, risk, ML, capital, and compliance to expand borrower eligibility, increase automation and instant approvals, and build intelligent decisioning systems that optimize conversion, operational efficiency, and portfolio quality.

How you’ll make an impact
  • Own the strategy and roadmap for streamlining the our decisioning & verification experience, translating risk, capital, compliance, and borrower-experience needs into clear priorities, requirements, and launch plans
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Capital, Compliance, Risk, and ML on expanding underwriting guidelines to reach new borrowers; lead delivery of expanded borrower segments
  • Define and evolve the backend logic for underwriting and decisioning, ensuring complex engineering systems capture all aspects of borrower risk; balance accuracy with friction, choosing the appropriate amount of data vs. uncertainty in risk tradeoffs
  • Increase automation and instant approvals in the HELOC underwriting process by leveraging new data sources and/or ML (including LLMs) to reduce manual human work while increasing speed and quality
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of product management experience on fast-moving, customer-obsessed teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive business outcomes through a strong balance of quantitative metrics and qualitative insight. You are pragmatic about data, comfortable making decisions with imperfect information, and have well-calibrated risk judgment.
  • Strong product sense with experience authoring and executing multi-quarter roadmaps, and living with the downstream consequences of those decisions.
  • Rigorous, analytical problem solver with clear, concise, and persuasive communication skills.
  • Ownership and growth mindset. You act like an owner, are confident yet humble, open to being wrong, and constantly seeking to improve both yourself and your team.
  • Stellar communication & collaboration skills to partner closely with xfn partners & surface relevant trade-offs clearly
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing complex backend systems that drive direct business results
  • Experience partnering closely with Machine Learning teams
