Job summary

Aequilibrium is seeking a Senior Product Designer to work on digital banking and financial services projects for credit unions and institutions. You will lead design from discovery to prototyping, shaping member journeys across web and mobile.

The role is remote in Canada, as an independent contractor with flexible hours. Please include hourly CAD rate expectations, earliest availability, and preferred weekly capacity with your application.

Qualifications

• Five or more years of UX or product‑design experience.
• Significant financial‑services design experience, ideally in digital banking, payments or lending.
• Portfolio showing contribution from problem definition and research through design and delivery.
• Strong hands‑on Figma skills, including components, variants, auto layout and interactive prototyping.
• Experience working within established design systems and technical constraints.
• Strong interaction‑design, information‑architecture and accessibility skills, including familiarity with WCAG.
• Experience collaborating closely with product managers and engineers.
• The confidence to facilitate stakeholder discussions, explain recommendations and deliver independently.
• Clear written and verbal communication.
• Based in Canada and legally eligible to perform the engagement.

Responsibilities

About the opportunity

Aequilibrium is looking for senior product designers for upcoming contract opportunities supporting credit unions and financial institutions. You will help improve digital banking experiences through research, interaction design, and hands‑on prototyping. Assignments may involve improving existing member journeys, supporting platform transformations, or developing concepts for future banking experiences.

You will collaborate with Product Managers, Program Managers, and Solution Architects. On client teams, you may partner closely with a product manager and lead developer to align member needs with business priorities and technical feasibility.

What you will do

Design better member experiences

• Lead product design from discovery through interaction design, prototyping and delivery support.

• Design responsive web and mobile banking journeys, including onboarding, authentication, payments, transfers and account management.

• Translate complex requirements into clear flows, wireframes and accessible interfaces.

• Consider how digital journeys connect with branches, contact centres and virtual banking services.

Use research to guide decisions

• Conduct member interviews, usability testing and other research appropriate to the assignment.

• Combine research with analytics, member feedback and support insights to identify friction.

• Facilitate stakeholder workshops to establish priorities and design direction.

• Define success measures and validate proposed improvements.

Design within banking platforms

• Understand vendor capabilities, design systems and implementation constraints.

• Work with architects and developers to assess configuration, platform extensions and custom development.

• Explain trade‑offs in terms of member value, accessibility, effort and delivery risk.

• Tailor reusable components and interaction patterns while maintaining consistency.

Support implementation

• Create interactive Figma prototypes to test concepts and communicate design intent.

• Provide clear specifications and collaborate with engineering during implementation.

• Review implemented experiences and help resolve usability issues.

• Contribute to AEQ’s digital banking evaluation methods and reusable design practices.

What you bring

• Significant financial‑services design experience, ideally in digital banking, payments or lending.

• Platforms such as Lumin Digital, Backbase, Central 1 Forge, VeriPark, Intellect Design or ebankIT, or comparable banking platforms.

• Digital banking migrations, platform consolidation or redesigns.

• Service design, journey mapping and service blueprinting.

• Advanced prototyping and familiarity with platform or API capabilities.

• Improvements to authentication, bill payments, transfers, statements or other everyday banking journeys.

Experience with every listed platform is not required. We value sound design judgment and the ability to learn new platforms.

Education

A degree or diploma in Design, Human–Computer Interaction, Psychology, Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Contract details

Scope, deliverables, weekly capacity, duration and fees will be agreed before each engagement begins. Some assignments may require regular collaboration during North American business hours.
