CBC News is looking for a creative editorial leader with sharp programming skills, outstanding news judgement, and an audience growth mindset to join the Morning Live team at CBC News Network, Canada’s top all-news, award-winning channel and livestream.

As Senior Producer, you support a team of more than 40 people to drive breaking, live and specials programming to broadcast and streaming channels with tight and frequent deadlines. Morning Live is Canada’s number one morning news program. It launches NN’s programming day with a strong mix of urgency and personality.

You’re experienced in conceiving, planning, shaping and vetting visual journalism. You bring a deep understanding of visual storytelling, including on-screen presentation, and live production. Your curiosity and creativity encourages experimentation including with different live and breaking formats to engage with audiences’ shifting viewing habits. Control room skills and experience in an automated environment are essential for this position.

You lead editorial story meetings, working with the team to set chase priorities and identify the stories, treatments and guests that will explain and reflect every morning’s significant news. The senior producer must also be able to pivot effectively during major breaking news.

You know how to give (and receive) meaningful feedback and support staff with guidance that is both respectful and inclusive. You foster creativity and demonstrate the desire and ability to mentor others.

Reporting to the executive producer of Morning Live, this role is accountable for Morning Live goals and objectives to ensure the program is of the highest quality, and conforms to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Based in Toronto, this is a full-time, permanent position, scheduled Monday to Friday, 3 a.m.-11:15 a.m. ET. These hours are subject to change and could include overtime due to operational requirements.

Key Tasks

  • Drive editorial to determine story priorities, develop innovative content strategies and guide teams through live, breaking and ongoing news stories.
  • Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by the executive producer, and management both in production and while broadcasting live.
  • Responsible for ensuring story meetings are an open and inclusive discussion of ideas.
  • Supervise daily assignment of writing, researching, gathering, editing, vetting and distribution of content against CBC News editorial strategy. Provide direction around story coverage including length, deadlines, updates, treatments and value-added material.
  • Co-ordinate show resources.
  • Determines the look, style and pace of the show lineup to ensure consistency with the show and network mandates.
  • Support editorial staff development and training, and provide ongoing feedback in collaboration with the executive producer.
  • Help manage current and future staffing needs in collaboration with the executive producer
  • Work with other areas of CBC News Network and CBC News to coordinate and collaborate across content (chase of guests, for example)
  • May perform all or part of the functions or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.
  • Uphold the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Qualifications

  • Minimum seven years' experience in broadcast journalism.
  • Experience in directing breaking and live news programming and content, including production planning and resource co-ordination.
  • Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
  • Superior writing, editorial and production skills.
  • Ability to identify and execute relevant, audience-focused stories which reflect issues being discussed by the general public.
  • A track record of creativity and experimentation with different video formats and story treatments.
  • Exceptional critical thinking, including problem solving, crisis management and editorial judgment.
  • Thoughtfulness around serving audiences, which is the core purpose of public broadcasting.
  • A solid knowledge of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Must have experience taking programs to air in an automated control room.
  • Highly developed production skills, including strong ability to produce a variety of program formats.
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to work effectively under 24/7 online newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Broad range of interests and knowledge, such as politics, business, science, sports, entertainment, pop culture, technology and health and medicine.
  • Superior coaching and mentoring skills with both developing and veteran journalists.
  • Experience working with a host, providing guidance and meaningful feedback.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to give and receive constructive, effective feedback.
  • Strong understanding of industry trends and their impact on CBC News.
  • A university degree or college diploma in journalism, video production or related fields is preferred.

Operational Requirements

  • This is a full-time permanent position and you must be able to work on-site in the CBC Toronto Broadcast Centre.
  • You will be expected to work overtime, including early mornings, evenings and weekends if news is breaking.
  • Familiarity with technology including iNews toolbar, DTV, Avid Media Central, Ross Overdrive, and Google tools for content creation, distribution, and planning.
