Job summary

FortisBC in Vancouver, BC, is seeking a Privacy Officer & Senior Legal Counsel to lead the privacy program, provide legal advice on privacy, AI, cybersecurity, data governance, and support the Information Systems unit. You will oversee privacy risk, assessments, breach response, and act as liaison with privacy regulators.

The role requires a law degree with 8+ years post-call, 3+ years in privacy/compliance, and certifications (CIPP/C/CIPM).

Qualifications

• Eight years post-call experience in a corporate legal department or law firm with good standing with the Law Society of B.C.
• Minimum of three years’ experience as a compliance or privacy professional.
• Completion of or eligible to complete an Information Access & Protection of Privacy program or certification (CIPP/C, CIPM) or Canadian privacy certification.
• Experience providing legal and privacy advice in regulated/public sector environment is an asset.
• Understanding of cybersecurity, data governance, and records management.

Responsibilities

• Act as FortisBC’s designated privacy authority and liaison with privacy regulators under applicable law.
• Lead implementation and ongoing improvement of privacy governance framework, policies, and procedures.
• Oversee privacy impact assessments and data storage assessments; manage access requests and data storage requirements per regulator guidance.
• Oversee privacy incident response including investigation, containment, remediation and reporting.
• Provide legal counsel on privacy, AI, cybersecurity, information systems, and data governance; deliver privacy training and awareness.
• Draft and negotiate information systems agreements and monitor regulatory developments; manage external counsel as needed.
