Job summary

Stantec in Calgary is seeking an Intermediate/Senior Transmission Planning Power Systems Studies Engineer to lead and execute transmission studies, including power flow, short circuit, and stability analyses.

You will apply PSSE and Python, with PSLF/Aspen as assets, and manage projects within scope, budget, and schedule while collaborating with clients and engineers to deliver robust grid solutions.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering required; PhD preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years in power systems studies; 10+ years preferred.
  • Experience with PSSE and Python; PSLF/Aspen a plus.
  • Ability to lead projects within defined scope, budget and schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and lead transmission planning studies using PSS/E.
  • Conduct power flow, short circuit, transient, and stability analyses.
  • Develop scripts to automate simulations and results.
  • Lead meetings with the client to kickoff projects and present results.
  • Prepare study reports detailing assumptions, methodology and results.

Your Opportunity

The Intermediate/Senior Transmission Planning Power Systems Studies Engineer conducts a wide range of transmission planning modelling and analysis, including power flow, short circuit, post-transient, and transient stability studies for system impact studies, load and generation interconnections, and NERC TPL-001 compliance studies. The applicant shall have experience with PSSE and Python, and experience with PSLF and/or Aspen would be an asset. A strong understanding of the analysis required to carry out these studies in compliance with applicable industry standards is necessary for this position. The ability to lead a team and to carry out projects within defined scope, budget, and schedule is a requisite.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Perform and lead teams carrying out power system modelling and studies using PSS/E, including the following: - Power flow
  • Transient (dynamic) analysis
  • Post-transient analysis
  • Short circuit
  • Preparation of scripts and programming to facilitate large numbers of simulations and automate compilation of results
  • Lead meetings with the client to initially kick off the project, review project progress and present results and recommendations.
  • Work with the project team to meet the allotted time, scope, and budget of assigned projects.
  • Prepare and review study reports, identifying assumptions, methodology, analysis, and results.
  • Assist/lead technical proposal development for studies opportunities.
  • Deep understanding of electrical power system and power electronics theory.
  • Experience with PSS/E required, experience with PSLF preferred.
  • Familiarity with Python programming
  • Experience with other power system simulation tools would be considered an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively explain and discuss solutions with clients and lead the project team.
  • Self-motivated and able to collaborate with teammates and clients.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Ph.D. degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in power systems studies, but more than 10 years of experience preferred.

Pay Range
  • Locations in Lower Mainland -- BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$114,600.00 - $164,600.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
