The City of Yellowknife is seeking a Senior Planner to guide urban planning and policy development within the Planning and Environment Division. You will lead complex projects and provide strategic input to shape Yellowknife’s urban landscape.

The role requires a university degree in urban and regional planning with at least six years’ experience in municipal planning, plus CIP and APPI memberships. Strong ArcGIS/AutoCAD skills are essential, and collaboration across teams is expected.

• Full CIP and APPI membership in good standing.

To meet this exciting demand, the department is seeking a talented Senior Planner who is ready to lead and contribute to shaping our evolving urban landscape.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As the Senior Planner, reporting to the Manager, Planning and Environment, you will bring strategic vision, leadership, and expert planning skills to guide complex projects and policy development. In this role, you will:

• Lead major planning and development projects that align with the City's short- and long-term strategic goals.
• Make critical recommendations on complex development permits and prepare policy and bylaw documents for public review and Council approval.
• Conduct research, provide data-driven recommendations, and deliver impactful reports that shape municipal strategies.
• Mentor and guide junior staff to foster professional growth and ensure effective implementation of policies and best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

To excel in this role, the position requires:

• A university degree in urban and regional planning or a related field.
• A minimum of six years of planning experience, preferably within a municipal government setting.
• Full membership in good standing with CIP and APPI.
• Proven ability to create and present visual design aids using tools like ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and advanced rendering software.
• Strong relationship-building skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while providing mentorship to colleagues.
• A valid NWT Class 5 Driver's License.

SALARY

The City of Yellowknife offers a starting salary of $115,231, as well as a comprehensive benefits package including monthly housing and vacation travel allowances totaling $450, and a defined benefit pension plan.
