Job description

As a Piping Engineer in our Engineering Services team, you will be working alongside a multi-disciplinary team on a wide variety of capital and expense projects. This work will be done in support of our safety, efficiency, reliability, production, and energy transition goals.Your success as an integral part of the piping team, will seen in your work on detailed design engineering activities, day-to-day technical support, long-term planning initiatives and strategic projects.

Your Responsibilities:

Assume responsibility as assigned for Piping Engineering design of piping systems for sustaining capital and expense projects at Irving Oil’s refineries and terminal facilities

Provide technical review and sealing of piping engineering deliverables and ensure piping design work complies with applicable codes, standards and regulations

Provide design engineering input on piping configuration/routing, support types and locations, tie-ins, specifications, and fabrication/installation details to the piping design team, working in an AutoCAD/Plant3D design environment

Prepare and check static and dynamic pipe stress analysis using Caesar II or AutoPIPE, to inform pipe routing, supports and restraints, equipment nozzle loading, and specification of engineered supports, expansion joints, flexible hoses, and other specialty fittings. Perform equipment nozzle checks/qualifications (static and rotating equipment) as appropriate

Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and Irving Oil stakeholders to integrate piping requirements and issues into overall project designs

Collaborate on project work and studies with 3rd party consultants, technology licensors, vendors and fabricators, and engineering contractors

Support construction activities on site, including periodic reviews during construction

Support the Piping Group Lead on project planning efforts, contributing to engineering scoping, scheduling and estimating, and project material take-offs for capital cost estimating

Work with the Piping Group Lead and organization peers to identify and execute continuous improvement initiatives to raise technical capability, productivity, and compliance

Support in the creation and/or select piping line class specifications for new or upgraded piping systems, complete with all calculations required for governing jurisdiction acceptance

Perform engineering calculations including minimum pipe wall thickness, flange leakage, flange rating, bolted joint analysis, reinforcing pad design, and pressure-relieving device reactions

Complete load transmittal forms, submit and review with engineering disciplines, as required

Support in the creation of item codes for piping line class specification complete with long description and maintenance of the commodity code system

Your Skills:

Strong analytical skills, paired with creative and collaborative problem-solving aptitude

Proven ability to engage with stakeholders including senior leaders

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to work effectively and meet commitments in a multi-disciplined project environment with competing priorities and deadlines

Working proficiency with applicable codes, standards, and regulations, governing process and utility piping design and construction, including ASME B31.1, 31.3, 31.4, 31.8, BPVC Sections II, VIII, XIII, and CSA Z662, B139, B149, and B51

Working proficiency with static and dynamic pipe stress analysis methods and tools (AutoPIPE or Caesar II)

Familiarity with above- and below-ground pipelines (CSA Z662), polymer-lined and refractory-line steel piping, and pressure tubing/ fittings for pneumatic and hydraulic systems would be an asset.

The work will require periodic visits to our operating facilities. You must be able to work in the field, including working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with working at heights and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards

Your Experience:

University degree in Mechanical/Piping/Materials Engineering with P.Eng. designation (or immediate eligibility) in New Brunswick is required

Minimum of 12 years of engineering experience with process and utility piping design in chemical, petrochemical or oil & gas plants, with a successful history of leading and supporting brownfield capital projects involving repairs, upgrades and modifications to existing equipment and piping in operating production facilities

Demonstrated leadership on teams, projects, functions, and initiatives
