We’re looking for a Senior Pathology Assistant to join our Histology team in Brampton, Ontario. You will be responsible for delivering in a timely manner the highest level of clinical and scientific quality to everyone we serve with a variety of testing using the latest technology. Your contributions will make a difference—the anatomic pathology support services you deliver will greatly impact downstream solutions and treatments critical to saving lives.
Status: Permanent Full Time
Shift: Monday to Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Discipline: Histology
Work Style: Onsite
Location: 115 Midair Court, Brampton, ON

How YOU will make a difference:
  • Perform gross examinations of surgical specimens, select, dissect, and prepare tissue sections for further processing and examination
  • Prioritize and expeditiously gross all specimens including stat cases
  • Provide accurate and efficient gross descriptions of all surgical specimens by documenting gross findings in accordance with laboratory manuals, procedures, and protocols
  • Review clinical history provided
  • Print and prepare tissue cassettes, submit tissue in cassettes for histological examination as required
  • Use positive patient identification to ensure all requisitions and worksheets (electronic or paper), specimens, and portions are traceable
  • Set up and operate laboratory equipment in preparation for specimen examinations
  • Load tissue processors, assuring correct end times
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for activities in their area
  • Open, separate, number, and arrange specimens for laboratory examination and trace results
  • Maintain simple laboratory records and inventory for supplies and reagents
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies by cleaning and maintaining quality assurance records
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practices and procedures
  • Photograph baskets of cassettes before loading into tissue processors
  • Participate in all quality assurance programs and ensure company and Ministry of Health guidelines are observed
  • Maintain knowledge of current policies and procedures in their assigned work area; complete action items, read work-related emails, attend staff meetings, stay informed, etc.
  • Use or wear equipment, protective devices, or clothing as required to ensure safety
  • Ensure quality control standards are maintained and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment
  • Monitor for the absence or defect in any equipment, protective device, or hazard that may endanger oneself or others
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Ensure work completion by adjusting day-to-day work schedules to accommodate unexpected absences and motivate staff to achieve productivity goals
  • Actively participate in departmental projects to achieve goals
  • Responsible for senior review of maintenance and QC for specific areas of responsibility
What YOU bring to the role:
  • Knowledge of Histology
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Pathology Assistant
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology and Gross Anatomy and dissection techniques
  • Strong knowledge of Microanatomy
  • Graduate of an approved Laboratory Sciences program or equivalent
  • Bachelor of Science in Biology or equivalent education related to duties and responsibilities
  • Proven excellence working in a team environment, with strong interpersonal, communication skills, and professionalism
  • CAP certification is beneficial
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to prioritize specimens for processing
  • Proven ability to perform duties independently or as a team member with high motivation
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, able to exercise independent judgment within scope of practice
  • Commitment to professional self-development
  • Ability to multi-task and perform under pressure while ensuring test result integrity in a fast-paced environment
  • Long periods of concentration required
