Job description

The Senior Paralegal plays a key role in supporting the legal operations of the organization, providing high-level support on real estate transactions, contract management, litigation coordination, and regulatory compliance. This role ensures the Legal Team functions efficiently and aligns with corporate objectives, legislative requirements, and risk management practices. The Senior Paralegal collaborates closely with internal departments, senior leaders, and external counsel to develop policies, improve processes, and support business growth. With a strong focus on team development, strategic oversight, and cross-functional collaboration, the Senior Paralegal ensures that legal matters are handled with professionalism, accuracy, and efficiency.Key Responsibilities

Legal Oversight & Risk Management

  • Provide strategic legal guidance to senior leadership, identifying areas of company exposure and advising on mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor and manage litigation activity in collaboration with external legal counsel, ensuring timely updates and coordinated responses.
  • Maintain a centralized register of ongoing or potential legal actions and risks across jurisdictions.
  • Review and support licensing, registrations, and compliance requirements for builder obligations (e.g., Alberta New Home Warranty, deposit insurance).

Leadership & Team Development

  • Coordinate team objectives, ensuring alignment with corporate priorities and day-to-day operational demands.
  • Lead regular team meetings and cross-departmental communications to maintain consistency across regions.
  • Mentor and develop legal team members, building leadership capacity and preparing for future growth.
  • Foster a collaborative and engaged team culture by supporting employee development and recognition.

Policy, Compliance & Training

  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal legal policies aligned with current legislation and organizational goals.
  • Conduct internal training sessions on legal processes, risk, and compliance best practices for departments such as operations, finance, and development
  • Ensure team adherence to document management systems and internal protocols for signing authority and approvals.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance compliance and streamline legal workflows.

Operational & Cross-Functional Support

  • Collaborate with multifamily project managers, Treasury, and Accounting to standardize operating procedures and ensure legal alignment.
  • Provide legal support on real estate transactions, financings, and other corporate matters in partnership with external counsel.
  • Support internal audits and financial reviews, working closely with the Corporate Controller.
  • Assist Accounts Payable with invoice coordination and external legal billing processes.
  • Review and summarize acquisition agreements, procurement contracts, NDAs, and other legal documents for clarity, risk, and legal sufficiency across all departments.

Technology, Automation & Continuous Improvement

  • Oversee legal document templates, policy manuals, and systems to ensure accessibility, accuracy, and up-to-date compliance.
  • Lead automation efforts in coordination with other departments to increase efficiency and reduce manual processing.
  • Attend legal conferences and professional development sessions to maintain knowledge of industry trends and legislative updates.

Work Experience

Beneficial

  • Progressive paralegal experience (6+ years)
  • Previous experience focused in Contract Review, Real Estate or Commercial transactions preferred (2+ years)
