Wood is recruiting for a Senior or Specialist Protection & Controls Engineer to join its Transmission and Distribution business, focusing on protection, control, and metering system design for electrical substations. This opportunity is hybrid and can be based in Calgary, AB, Edmonton, AB, Vancouver, BC, Oakville, ON, or Sarnia, ON.

The Role

You will provide technical leadership and support to a team of engineers and designers to develop protection, control, and metering system designs for electrical substations ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV, from conceptual stage through construction and commissioning. The role also includes conducting protection coordination studies, relay settings, engineering design reviews, factory inspections, and supporting construction and commissioning activities.

Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum 8 years of utility-specific protection, control, and metering experience. EPC project experience is an asset.
  • Electrical Engineering Degree from a recognized university, with the ability to register as a Professional Engineer in Canada and/or the U.S.
  • 3-4 years of experience in protection coordination studies and relay settings for high-voltage utility transmission systems is an asset.
  • Experience with relay setting software such as ASPEN, CAPE, EasyPower, SKM Power Tools, and relay programming software from SEL and GE.
  • Experience with outage planning, construction sequencing, and commissioning is an asset.
  • Familiarity with utility protection and control maintenance and operational practices is an asset.
  • Strong English communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Authorization to work lawfully in Canada without sponsorship now or in the future is required.
