Job description

Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Optomechanical Engineer to join our dynamic and agile mechanical team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and developing mechanical systems to support next-generation optical system designs, as well as other mechanical systems. Success in this position requires a strong foundation in precision mechanical engineering, GD&T, structural analysis (thermal, vibration) with a detailed understanding of optical mounting methods and optical metrology.

About Us

PulseMedica, proudly Great Place to Work Certified for the third consecutive year, is a fast-growing, innovative medical device startup. We combine cutting-edge research, advanced technology, and production excellence to tackle ophthalmic diseases and disabilities. Our mission is to provide novel treatment options through state-of-the-art solutions, blending real-time classical computer vision, deep learning algorithms, 3D eye imaging, and high-precision laser surgery. With a commitment to revolutionizing ophthalmic treatments, we are dedicated to delivering exceptional outcomes that prevent blindness and disabilities caused by eye diseases. At PulseMedica, we foster a collaborative and supportive environment where talent thrives, and our team’s collective impact drives change in the field of eye care.

The Opportunity

This is a unique chance to contribute to groundbreaking innovations in optomechanical engineering within a fast-paced, collaborative environment. As a key member of our mechanical team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping products based on cutting-edge optical and optomechanical designs. You will have the opportunity to work on diverse projects, tackle complex challenges, and directly impact the development of high-performance, precision-driven technologies. If you’re passionate about pushing the boundaries of engineering and thrive in a setting that values creativity, adaptability, and technical excellence, we want to hear from you.

The person will be responsible to:

  1. Design and develop optomechanical systems, including optical mounts, housings, alignment mechanisms, dynamic positioning and control systems, and related components.
  2. Collaborate closely with the optical and electronics design teams to create innovative opto-mechanical systems, including structures, actuators, and feedback sensors.
  3. Perform mechanical analyses to support optical design tolerance analysis.
  4. Design new fixtures and equipment to enable verification of integrated sub-systems and systems.
  5. Demonstrate skill in building and testing of mechanical/optomechanical designs.
  6. Create detailed technical documentation, technical reports, assembly and alignment processes, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  7. Work closely with optical engineering to develop, assemble and align optical fixtures for R&D and production.
  8. Engage and manage subcontractors to ensure quality outcomes are delivered within required timelines.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Optical Engineering.
  2. 8+ years (senior) or 5+ years (junior) of experience in mechanical design and engineering.
  3. Strong proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Onshape) for designing and modeling mechanical components and assemblies.
  4. Ability to design “outside the box” solutions that are grounded in precision engineering principles that maintain simplicity in structure, yet achieve performance goals.
  5. Coursework or demonstrable knowledge in mechanical engineering principles including materials science, stress analysis, kinematics, and manufacturing processes.
  6. Ideally, also coursework or demonstrable knowledge of geometric optics, opto-mechanical design principles.
  7. Experience with tolerance analysis and precision alignment techniques.
  8. Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical systems.
  9. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  10. Proven communication skills, both written and verbal, and demonstrated ability to understand cross-functional team dynamics.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with laser systems, imaging systems, and/or photonics applications.
  2. Proficiency with finite element analysis (FEA) tools for mechanical simulations.
  3. Experience with thermal management techniques in optomechanical systems.
  4. Proficiency with estimation techniques for system-level tolerancing.
  5. Previous experience in commercial industries such as lithography, medical device, optical metrology instrumentation is highly desirable.

Anticipated Start Date: as soon as a suitable candidate is found

Duration: Full time Permanent (40 hours per week)

Salary: Commensurate to experience and qualifications
