Job Summary

The Senior Officer, Design and Construction or Engineer, Design and Construction, manages projects, provides technical support, reviews plans, and oversees construction for capital and maintenance projects. This role involves collaborating with internal departments and external agencies, acting as a technical advisor for new railway builds, customer sidings, and track geometry, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and CN’s operating plan.

Main Responsibilities
Project Management
  • Manage track, siding, and grade separation projects, including design modifications, ensuring on-time and within-budget completion.
  • Review and approve track design components, securing stakeholder approval.
  • Ensure track geometry meets CN standards.
  • Inspect completed projects to verify compliance with specifications.
Project Coordination
  • Evaluate and respond to submissions and correspondence related to projects affecting CN’s property.
  • Coordinate with teams to implement project changes.
  • Provide guidance on project actions and responses.
  • Maintain relationships to safeguard CN’s property and ensure safety.
Cost Estimation
  • Provide accurate project cost estimates, including civil, track, and signal upgrades, and assist in cost review processes.
Audits, Inspections, and Safety Assessments
  • Conduct crossing audits, inspections, and safety assessments to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Implement corrective measures as needed.
  • Perform site surveys.
Working Conditions

This role involves both office and outdoor work in various weather conditions, including travel up to 20%. Availability on-call 24/7 for emergencies, working shifts, weekends, and holidays is required. Exposure to loud equipment, construction sites, dust, and railway materials is expected.

Experience and Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years in construction and project management.
  • High School Diploma or GED; Bachelor’s in Civil or Construction Engineering preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license; Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and knowledge of SAP, GIS, TIS, and civil engineering is advantageous.
  • Bilingual in English and French is preferred.
