Job Summary
The Senior Officer, Design and Construction or Engineer, Design and Construction, is responsible for project management, technical support, plan review, and field oversight for construction projects. The role involves handling new construction projects, collaborating with internal departments and external agencies, and acting as a technical advisor to ensure projects align with engineering standards and CN’s operating plan.
Main Responsibilities
Project Management
  • Handle various track, siding, and grade separation projects, including design modifications, ensuring projects are completed within budget.
  • Review and approve track design components, ensuring stakeholder buy-in.
  • Ensure track geometry conforms to CN standards.
  • Inspect projects upon completion to verify compliance with specifications.
Project Coordination
  • Review and respond to submissions from stakeholders to protect CN’s interests.
  • Collaborate with teams to implement changes and provide guidance.
  • Maintain relationships to safeguard CN’s property and ensure safe conditions.
Cost Estimation
  • Provide accurate project cost estimates and review estimates for internal and external projects.
Audits, Inspections, and Safety Assessments
  • Conduct crossing audits, inspections, and safety assessments for compliance.
  • Implement corrective actions and conduct site surveys.
Working Conditions
  • Work in both office and outdoor environments, sometimes in unfamiliar locations and various weather conditions.
  • Be available 24/7 for critical incidents and work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Occasional travel within the territory is required.
Requirements
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years in construction and project management experience.
Education/Certification
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering and/or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation are assets.
Competencies and Skills
  • Collaboration, problem-solving, self-development, agility, critical thinking, and impactful communication.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, project budgeting, and familiarity with SAP, GIS, TIS, civil and geotechnical engineering are assets.
