Job description

Vista Radio prides itself on a fresh vision of broadcasting and an unparalleled commitment to its community involvement. We are privileged to operate in 49 radio stations (and growing) broadcasting across 70+ transmitters located in three Provinces and the Northwest Territories. We are also connected to our communities with 37 MyTownNow websites.

Vista Radio seeks an experienced and dynamic Senior News Director to lead provincial news operations from our Courtenay location on stunning Vancouver Island.

As a key leader within Vista Radio's growing team, the Senior News Director will drive editorial strategy and ensure exceptional journalism standards. This role requires an innovative, solutions-focused leader dedicated to fostering effective communication and collaboration with General Managers and Program Directors.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Director of News to develop and execute editorial strategies.
  • Provide strategic editorial oversight and direction across B.C.
  • Conduct weekly check-ins to offer personalized coaching and mentorship to news team members.
  • Oversee content management for all cluster websites, ensuring consistency and high-quality standards.
  • Copyedit and review content for accuracy, quality, and alignment with editorial standards.
  • Co-develop training programs and professional development initiatives alongside the Director of News.
  • Partner in designing and implementing the News Director Accelerator program.
  • Contribute to the creation of the Journalism 101 certification curriculum.
  • Ensure adherence to current SEO best practices in all digital content.
  • Occasionally voice content, including commercial reads and fill-in newscast.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 10 years of full-time newsroom or equivalent journalistic experience.
  • Proven track record of successful news management and leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to journalistic integrity, both within the newsroom and in collaboration with other departments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary journalism/broadcast best practices.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Confident, credible, and professional on-air presence.
  • Ability to thrive independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Audition, newsroom software, and broadcast equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
