The University of Lethbridge Information Technology Services department is seeking applications for a Senior Network Analyst. This is a full-time, continuing position located at our Lethbridge campus.

Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure, the Senior Network Analyst is a capable and versatile professional who is part of a team that is responsible for the University’s network infrastructure and assists in designing, implementing, and maintaining the networks including campus wired, wireless, datacenter, and core technologies with a focus on the wired infrastructure.

The Senior Network Analyst works with vendors and other peers to research emerging technologies, stays current with best practices across the network stack, and works with other decentralized IT units, faculty, staff, and students in the integration, maintenance, and problem resolution of network services with a focus on user experience. They assure that the University’s networking requirements are met with the highest level of performance, reliability, and security. They also contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other backgrounds and cultures.

Duties and responsibilities:

Design:

  • Assist in the design and implementation of wired technologies with a focus on software-defined networking and user experience, keeping up with industry trends and best practices, suggesting product and technology direction based on that knowledge.
Implement:
  • Collaborate with the team to schedule and implement networking infrastructure.
  • Work with the University’s procurement team to prepare and evaluate bid specifications for the purchase and maintenance of network hardware, software, and services.
  • Work with vendors/VARs in the process of product selection, pricing, order, and delivery.

Maintain:
  • Maintain the integrity of the wired networks by installing, upgrading, and maintaining hardware such as routers, switches, and next-gen firewalls, keeping up to date with current software and firmware.
  • Utilize network monitoring software and systems to detect conditions requiring corrective action or performance tuning.
  • Take a proactive approach to plan and organize upgrades as well as maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of network design, maintenance activities, and inventory.
  • Independently work with vendors to diagnose and resolve network problems as required.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the IT Services team by performing other duties as assigned.

Professional Development:
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional development.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with peers at other institutions and through provincial, national, or other collaborative bodies.
  • Attend development and training courses as required.

This position plays a key role in administering core critical University infrastructure, ensuring these services are properly supported, maintained, and enhanced. Numerous University audiences rely on these critical services, and therefore a high degree of planning, coordination, and attention to detail is required to ensure business continuity. Strong organization, written and verbal communication skills are essential.

The University of Lethbridge is undertaking a job classification and compensation review for Administrative Professional Officer ( APO ) positions. As such, the salary range currently assigned for this position may be adjusted as a result of this project.

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science is required. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.
  • Cisco CCNP certification is preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution.

Experience:
  • Ten+ years of computer networking infrastructure experience is required.
  • Proficiency with Cisco wired infrastructure is required.
  • Experience with Cisco Campus Fabric and Catalyst Center is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with service management processes such as incident management, service request management, change management, etc.

Skills:
  • A thorough understanding of network infrastructure and protocols, layer 2 and 3 networking protocols, multicast, DHCP , DNS , IP address management, and network monitoring software is required.
  • The ability to solve network-related problems by using device diagnostics and troubleshooting techniques is required.
  • A thorough understanding of the network protocol stack ( OSI , TCP /IP) as well as networking equipment such as next-gen firewalls, routers, and switches is required.
  • A thorough understanding of routing protocols such as OSPF , BGP , and ISIS is required.

Effort:
  • Requires working at computer workstations for extended periods of time and requires regularly lifting and carrying objects weighing up to twenty-five pounds and occasionally up to fifty pounds.
  • Requires sufficient mobility to replace networking equipment and connect cables in ceilings and wiring centers which may require climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.

Other:
  • This position may be required to be available evenings and weekends to respond to network outages and after-hours upgrades.
  • Occasional travel to remote sites may be required.
  • A valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
