Position Overview
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading complex design projects from project acquisition to completion, mentoring and representing Rockford in client-facing engagements. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership, project management, and client relationship skills.
Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
- Apply advanced engineering methodologies to complex mechanical and multidisciplinary projects.
- Scope, plan, organize, and execute engineering projects within your competency sphere, ensuring technical accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Independently take responsibility for both your own work and that of others.
- Provide ongoing technical guidance to design teams.
- Serve as Lead Design Engineer or Subject Matter Expert (SME) for specialized or complex applications.
- Engineering Quality
- Chair design reviews, ensuring comprehensive documentation and records.
- Perform design hand-offs, peer reviews, and ongoing quality checks across multiple simultaneous projects.
- Ensure models, drawings, spreadsheets, and other design documents meet quality standards and are reviewed appropriately.
- Validate engineering calculation, stress analysis, and performance assessments for accuracy.
- Project Management & Communication
- Provide technical expertise and cost estimates for project proposals.
- Breakdown complex engineering problems into smaller tasks for execution.
- Manage engineering schedules, milestones, and reporting, ensuring accurate progress updates.
- Identify and address scope changes and engineering change orders.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
- Represent Rockford independently in client and project-related technical engagements.
- Serve as the face of Rockford in client interactions, maintaining professionalism and trust.
Manufacturing Support
- Provide technical oversight for factory acceptance testing (FAT), inspection and test plans (ITPs), and installation and commissioning plans.
- Assist in troubleshooting design-related challenges during fabrication, assembly and installation.
- Support on-site inspections and commissioning, ensure design intent is maintained in the field.
- Validate equipment performance in the field, making recommendations for adjustments when required.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide sustained guidance over design teams, fostering collaboration and technical excellence.
- Mentor and develop engineers, designers, and multidisciplinary team members through ongoing technical guidance.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in industrial systems or mechanical engineering.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGS, or eligible for registration in Saskatchewan.
- 12+ years of progressive mechanical or industrial systems engineering experience, with a proven track record in complex, multidisciplinary machine design projects.
- Knowledgeable and conversant in multi-disciplinary engineering, mechanical designs, assembly, and final product
- Able to identify and apply complex methodologies to define problems and analyze proposed solutions.
- Experienced in project management methodologies and their appropriate application
- Knowledgeable of industry-related codes, standards, procedures, and practices to complete manufactured and / or assembled products
- Understanding of Lean processes and how it related to engineered-to-order functions
- Ability through diplomacy and tact, to negotiate, and influence and guide team members to meet requirements and timelines
- Understanding the project design lead role and act as a team player in a diverse and dynamic work environment
- Experience in People Management is considered an asset
- Valid class 5 drivers license.
