A Hamilton-based company is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design for a variety of building projects, working closely with both external project teams and internal design teams. This role involves overseeing all technical design requirements, managing project coordination, client relations, and supervising the mechanical team throughout all project phases from design to construction.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Lead the technical design and development of mechanical systems for various building types, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and building automation systems.
  • Coordinate mechanical systems with other disciplines (electrical, architectural, etc.) for new construction projects.
  • Attend and represent the mechanical discipline at design meetings.
  • Select relevant equipment and materials for mechanical systems.
  • Review and verify design calculations for mechanical systems.
  • Oversee and guide intermediate and junior mechanical engineers on assigned projects.
  • Manage the production of design documentation, including drawings and specifications.
  • Ensure all project deadlines are met by managing the workload of the mechanical team.
  • Administer contracts and perform contract-related duties throughout the construction phase.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and conduct performance reviews for junior and intermediate team members.
  • Collaborate with the Mechanical Department Manager on internal management tasks.

Projects may include working on residential (low and high-rise), educational projects (public and private schools, post-secondary institutions), commercial projects (box stores, base buildings, etc.), institutional projects (public sector facilities), industrial facilities, retirement / long term care facilities, and a variety of other projects.

Qualifications and Required Skills :

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.), or Limited Engineering License / Technologist (LEL, LET).
  • Ten (10) plus years of mechanical engineering experience in the building service industry.
  • Extensive technical knowledge and ability to deliver mechanical designs for a variety of building types, including, but not limited to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, plumbing and drainage systems, building automation systems / controls, fire protection systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian and Ontario codes and standards including OBC including SB-1 and SB-4 supplementary standards, NFPA 13, NFPA 14, CSA B149.1, ASHRAE 62.1, and ASHRAE 90.1.
  • Proven ability to lead a team of 3 to 4 mechanical staff in the development and delivery of construction documentation and associated engineering calculations, coordination of mechanical elements, and final verification of mechanical design of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to think analytically, attention to detail, resourceful and detail-oriented, and team and customer service focused.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, architectural, and structural drawings and systems as it relates to construction and the implications on mechanical designs.
  • Ability to effectively resolve construction issues, manage client expectations, review construction sites, liaise with contractors, and other contract administration requirements.
