Job Description

At IPS, we are global leaders in developing innovative solutions for the consulting, architecture, engineering, project controls, procurement, construction management, and CQV of technically complex facilities, primarily in the life sciences industry. We are looking for a talented Senior Mechanical Designer to join our team at our office located in Vaughan, Ontario !

In this role, you will assist the Project Lead with design computations and quantity estimates and develop probable construction cost estimates. You will also perform the role of Project Lead for less complex projects within the business unit.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Promote the use of, and participate in the development of, company design and production standards.
  • Prepare reports, specifications, plans, and support construction for projects.
  • Assess the requirements of a project, break a project into tasks, and work with a Project Manager to determine the scope of work, budget, and staffing.
  • Use computer-aided design technologies to develop sketches, drawings, and construction documents.
  • Review drawings and documents to ensure compliance with company design and production standards.
  • Select equipment based on recommendations of the Project Lead, and fill out equipment schedules.
  • Create drawings of your designs, and produce markups to be incorporated in drawings by the design team.
  • Research design options and document findings for the Project Lead.
  • Keep the Project Lead and / or Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project scope or additional services.
  • Research code issues and communicate with code officials, as well as other disciplines.
  • Make clear, well-organized, and effective presentations to technical audiences.
  • Ensure that drawings and designs are per company quality, production, and design standards.
  • Mentor, support, and guide Designers and Engineers who are early in their careers with project execution.
  • Make calculations, using engineering formulas and skills for design such as utility generation sizing, air balance and air pressure drop calculations, heat gain / heat loss calculations, duct / pipe sizing, equipment selection, and specification.
  • Create specialized drawings, such as operations matrices, elevations, or details, and diagrams.
  • Perform additional tasks or special projects as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 10+ years previous design experience in the building design industry (for example : mechanical HVAC systems, air and hydronic distribution, heat loss / gain calculations, equipment selection and specification, etc.).
  • Technical or Associate Degree in design from an accredited technical institution or college.
  • Must be proficient in the use of engineering design programs and computer-aided drafting (AutoCAD / Revit / Navisworks).
  • Has a demonstrated ability to manage projects, problem solve, communicate effectively with all key personnel, and manage time.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven time management skills and can juggle more than one project at a time.
  • Thorough knowledge of system design and applicable codes.
