The Opportunity

We are seeking a dynamic leader to join as the senior member of the ship’s management team. Reporting to the Marine Superintendent, Central, this position is responsible for the overall management of the employees and vessel including managing and leading the Shipboard Management Team.

The role

Manages and leads the Shipboard Management Team by:

  • Serving as a senior route operations advisor to the team and spokesperson for the team with the Marine Superintendent, Executive, and other departments and personnel
  • Working with Colleagues to identify and implement improvements to customer service, safety, and the financial and operational performance of the vessel
  • Participate in cross-functional committees
  • Monitoring and managing labour and non-labour expenditures and costs
  • Resolving and providing guidance on the resolution of customer and employee problems, complaints and grievances
  • Ensuring timely and effective communication amongst employees across watch and departments

Manages Human Resources / Employee Relations activities by:

  • Attending job interviews of the deck department and subordinate managers/ supervisors, orientating and familiarization employees and conducting clearances and performances appraisals
  • Monitoring, guiding, coaching and addressing issues related to performance, conduct and attendance
  • Assisting in development and progression of employees, and in particular deck crew

Establishes and maintains professional work environment by:

  • Ensure safe practices in vessel operation, monitoring that employee work practices meet WCB standards; regularly conducting emergency drills in passenger safety and control
  • Implementing employee training programs in all phases of vessel operation and ensuring crew members are familiar with policies and procedures
  • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations, legislation and company dress appearance standards
  • Participating in investigation of incidents and internal inquiries
  • Taking leadership in initiating effective corrective action and reporting equipment failures, damage, service interruption, accidents and incidents

Manages route operational performance by:

  • Serving as a Watch Master on the vessel, assuming all authorities and responsivities of the Master
  • Monitoring the service plan and initiating changes to operating schedules in response to traffic patterns
  • Overseeing the delivery and crewing of the vessel to and from refit, submitting the refit list and budget, participating in pre-refit meetings and monitoring the progress of the refit
  • Ensuring that all policies and procedures are kept current
  • Preparing and ensuring the maintenance of Senior Master Standing Orders and route performance records for the vessel’s operations in accordance with regulatory, vessel certification and audit requirements
  • Contributing to the preparation of capital project business cases and related budgets; preparing capital requests, analysing and reviewing cross-watch and departmental financial and other performance reports; taking and initiating timely preventative corrective actions

What you bring to the team

You have a Master near Coastal or Master Mariner certificate of competency and at least three years experience as a Master of a vessel over 350 GRT. In addition, a minimum of one year post-secondary education in business or a related field or equivalent.

One year of shore-side management experience in a business setting is an asset. Travel is required.

Additional information

The target salary range: $140,400 – $175,600 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
