The Role

Reporting to the Marketing & Communications Manager, the Senior Marketing and Communications Specialist plays a vital role in strengthening CUE’s brand, reputation, and strategic visibility. This role contributes directly to the university’s recruitment, retention, and engagement goals by developing and executing impactful marketing strategies and campaigns.

Working closely with the marketing and communications team, the Senior Marketing and Communications Specialist ensures alignment between institutional priorities and all marketing efforts, helping to translate university goals into compelling, targeted content and initiatives. The role also provides expert guidance to senior leaders, manages cross-functional projects, and supports the operational planning of key initiatives to drive audience engagement and support CUE’s long-term success, mission, and vision.

Responsibilities

Coordination, Intake & Project Oversight (50%)

  • Serve as the central intake point for all MarCom requests, assessing scope, timelines, and required resources.
  • Provide initial marketing and communications advice to clients, helping refine project needs and identify appropriate tactics/strategies.
  • Liaise with the Director to prioritize and assign work to team members, or external contractors.
  • Monitor progress of projects and campaigns to ensure alignment with university priorities and timely delivery.
  • Track and report on operational aspects of projects (budgets, timelines, deliverables).

Liaison with External Contractors & Vendors (20%)

  • Manage relationships with contractors, agencies, and vendors, leveraging expertise to obtain maximum value.
  • Oversee deliverables, ensuring quality, alignment with brand/standards, and fulfillment of project objectives.
  • Process and monitor invoices, confirming allocation of funds from campus partners as required.

Content Oversight & Development (20%)

  • Support content development by refining key messages and ensuring alignment with CUE’s brand, style, and identity standards.
  • Review and edit content prepared by the Marketing Specialist or external partners for accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
  • Seek out and develop stories that support key brand narratives; may include interviewing faculty, students, and researchers, crafting compelling narratives, and pitching stories to internal or external channels.
  • Provide guidance for copywriting across internal and external channels (web, social media, speaking notes, etc.) and contribute content as needed.
  • Contribute to data and analytics related to web, social, and campaigns to inform tactical improvements.

Environmental Scanning & Tactical Insights (5%)

  • Conduct environmental scans and monitor trends to identify tactical opportunities.
  • Compile and share analytics and insights to support project planning and informed decision-making.

Event & Internal Engagement Support (5%)

  • Support coordination of key internal events (Homecoming, State of the University, convocation, town halls, employee events) in a project and liaison capacity.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in marketing, communications, or project coordination within a mid- to large-sized organization or agency; post-secondary experience considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating projects from intake through to delivery, including working with multiple stakeholders and external vendors.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google applications, with aptitude to learn new platforms and tools as required.
  • Experience with project management software (e.g., Asana, Trello, or similar) considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite or Canva considered an asset.
  • Enthusiasm for Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE), its mission and vision.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence and liaise effectively across multiple levels of the university.
  • Superior English language writing, editing, and oral communication skills, with the ability to refine and ensure consistency of key messages.
  • Proven ability to intake, scope, and prioritize marketing and communications requests, balancing multiple client needs and deadlines.
  • Strong project coordination skills, including assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring deliverables are met.
  • Ability to manage external contractors and vendors to achieve maximum value and quality of deliverables.
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving, and analytical skills, with the ability to apply data and insights to improve tactical outcomes.
  • Attention to detail, organizational excellence, and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of digital and content marketing, with the ability to contribute to creative processes and guide content alignment with brand standards.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and analytics tools.
  • Understanding of AI tools, ethics and workflows and how and when to appropriately implement them.
  • Working knowledge of design, photography, and video production processes is considered an asset.
  • Understanding of media relations is considered an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check results.
