Job summary

CPKC's Senior Manager, Track will lead the safety, reliability, and performance of the rail network across the defined territory, overseeing Track and Structures assets and driving cost-effective engineering solutions to keep trains moving safely.

This role requires an engineering degree, strong project management and regulatory expertise, and the ability to lead teams, manage budgets, and collaborate with Operations, Mechanical, and other stakeholders to achieve strategic objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in rail infrastructure and track maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory standards.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Senior Manager, Track plays a critical leadership role in shaping the safety, reliability, and performance of our rail network. Responsible for overseeing all Track and Structures assets across a defined territory, this leader will drive operational excellence, ensure the delivery of cost-effective engineering solutions, and enable the safe, efficient movement of trains. Through strategic asset management, strong stakeholder partnerships, and unwavering commitment to engineering and regulatory standards, the successful candidate will help build and maintain the infrastructure that keeps our business moving forward.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Provide professional engineering oversight for Track and Structures assets across the assigned territory, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and corporate policies while maintaining safe and reliable infrastructure.
  • Champion a strong safety culture by leading the consistent application of CPKC safety practices, policies, and procedures and fostering accountability across all levels of the organization.
  • Deliver operational excellence by achieving safety, compliance, service, and financial targets while driving continuous improvement initiatives that enhance network performance and efficiency.
  • Lead emergency preparedness and response efforts, coordinating recovery activities during service interruptions and executing seasonal readiness plans related to winter operations, flooding, and wildfire events.
  • Manage workforce performance and labour relations, ensuring work is executed in accordance with collective agreements while promoting a productive and engaged work environment.
  • Build and strengthen cross‑functional partnerships with Operations, Engineering, Mechanical, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment, collaboration, and successful execution of business objectives.
  • Own territory asset performance and capital planning, balancing current‑year execution with long‑term infrastructure investment priorities to optimize safety, reliability, and return on investment.
  • Develop high‑performing teams and ensure regulatory compliance, coaching leaders, driving talent development and succession planning, and overseeing the investigation and reporting of train accidents and infrastructure damage in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • 5 years’ experience in the maintenance railway physical plant, and good understanding of track maintenance, track renewal & structures maintenance
  • Strong understanding of financial and accounting principles, including budget management and cost control.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and corporate policies.
  • Proven project management skills, with the ability to develop and execute project plans and schedules.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in both emergency and non‑emergency operating environments.
  • Experience leading teams in a field‑based or operational setting, with a focus on safety, performance, and employee development.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build relationships, collaborate across functions, and lead with integrity.

Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre‑employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
